Furthest Sense
Ride Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Unsure of emotions,
And unsure of my stand,
That time was so perfect,
Who could ever understand?
So don't try to criticize,
You don't know the change that's in my eyes.
Plastic feelings and emotions,
Your lifestyle is your only tie.

It's time for a change,
I'm not asking, I'm telling you.
I'm watching, I'm listening,
But to touch seems the furthest sense away.

Tomorrow's another day,
Hesitance belongs to yesterday.
But I'm screaming, I'm shouting,
I'm sick of everything that's said.
The stars are out tonight,
And in my eyes there's a guiding light,

That's keeping me awake,
And making my dreams my only sight.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ride's song "Furthest Sense" expresses the feeling of being uncertain and confused about one's emotions and place in the world. The singer seems to be talking to someone who is being critical of them, but they ask the person not to judge them harshly because they are going through changes that are hard to understand. The song talks about feelings of plasticity, as if emotions are not true or real, and the only thing tying the person to their lifestyle is their emotions.

The lyrics suggest a need for a change, and the person singing is not asking for it, but demanding it. However, the change seems unattainable and abstract because the sense of touch is so far away. The song expresses the idea that the future is uncertain, but the past is something they need to let go of. The singer is frustrated with what people are saying and making noise about, and they want to have the freedom to live by their own rules. The stars in the sky serve a guiding force that keeps them on the right path, and while they are awake, their dreams are the only thing they can see.

Overall, "Furthest Sense" conveys the feeling of a person who is struggling to find their own identity in a changing world, where emotions seem false, and there is a need to break free from what everyone else is saying.

Was a britpop fanatic, boring Oklahoma. Walked into a record shop and the owner tossed me a free promo of this EP. he said it was up my alley. Boy, was it. I popped that sucker in and was taken into this new wall of shoegaze vibe. Furthest Sense and Like a Daydream are still one of my favorite songs of all time. Ride is eternal. I still have that original promo cd.
