In My World
Rigmor Gustafsson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The darkness falls and fills the air
and when I inhale, it fills my veins
it’s too late to hide

I’m stepping down, stepping out
to another dimension
so I close my eyes and I search for space

In my world

I can fly

Like the wind
I am free

and I live for eternity

The light arises and startles me

shatters the fragile shelter that I’ve built

it’s too late to hide

and when it’s dark I long for light

but the light’s also too bright

so I close my eyes and I search for space

In my world

I can fly

like the wind
I am free

and I live for eternity

(piano solo)

Lets close all the doors,
imagine we’re in our own universe
a perfectly safe, beautiful place,

no trace of the actions outside

In my world

I can fly

like the wind
I am free

In my world

I can fly

like the wind

I am free

and I live for eternity

Overall Meaning

Rigmor Gustafsson's song "In My World" is a poetic expression of escapism. The first verse begins with a dark atmosphere taking over the surroundings, and it becomes a part of the singer's own being as she breathes it in. The feeling of helplessness builds up as the realization hits that it is too late to hide. So instead, she steps down and out into another dimension, closing her eyes and searching for space where she can be free from the darkness that seems to have engulfed her. These lines give the impression that the singer is trying to escape from a harsh reality that she feels powerless to change.

Then the second verse takes a drastic turn, and the light arises, shattering the frail defenses the singer had built around herself. Here, we see that the light becomes too much to bear too, and the singer, now left confused, simply closes her eyes again, longing for space. It is as though she doesn't know where to turn and finds solace only in her own world. In "In My World," the concept of escapism is artfully expressed, leading one to think about the different ways people try to escape from reality. The song also highlights the dangers of constant escapism, leading to a lack of action and agency in tough situations.
