1.)Rise from Macclesfield, UK is a producer and musician currently recording for the Futuristica Music label. Rise has worked with and produced for artists such as Deborah Jordan, Replife, Jazz Chronicles, Low Budget Soul, Beit Nun and Spinnerty to name but a few. In 2011 he released his debut L.P. 'Messages'.

2.)Rise from Los Angeles, California formed in 1993 and is a death metal band with some black metal influences that appeared on their third full-length. The band is still active and so far they have released one demo tape and three full-length albums (as well as a new album forthcoming.)

3.)Rise hails from Brooklyn, New York. An underground hip hop artist who has released two albums and has appeared on a few compilations. Known for his witty wordplay/punchlines, complex rhyme schemes, and smooth flow.

4.)Rise from Los Angeles, California formed in high school in '77 and were a punk rock band. They auditioned sophomore Tom Araya [Slayer] as a bassist, but his mom decided they'd be a bad influence on him. The first three Rise singles came on colored (and sometimes shaped) vinyl.

5) RISE was formed in the summer of 2003 by Craig Junghandel (vocals), Mark Schiesl (guitars), Jason Roberts (bass), and Ray Rocha (drums). The band, located on the California Central Coast, combines professionalism and musicianship, along with an infectious amount of energy and enthusiasm. Their material consists of songs spanning the last five decades, and includes everything from Al Green to Iron Maiden, though high-energy hard rock is regarded as their specialty.

6)Rise is a largely celtic-influenced alt.folk band from the Island of Bute on the Scottish West Coast. Known for the high degree of musicianship on their albums, their music has been described as eclectic, original, inventive, very musical and highly evocative.

7)Rise are a four piece originals band based in West Yorkshire, UK. Their music draws upon influences ranging from Soul/Funk to Rock and (a little) Jazz. It has been described as easy to listen to, un-offensive, and chilled!

I meet a friend of my mom that was tor-tured by the government; they broke her leg and electr-ocuted her. She survived. She was a primary school teacher in the highlands of Peru. A police officer blamed her of being shining path just because she didn't want to go out with him, and she talked with the mothers of her school to tell them not to let their husbands hit them. Many people suffered even more from both sides there, the "path-ers" and the-so ldiers and police officers. (Dash-es added on purpose)

I don't know too much about this, but it seems like the indigenous peasants were the biggest victims here since they were massacred by both the Peruvian State and Shining Path. This is actually pretty heart breaking to hear, specially as a Latino Marxist myself. Hopefully the people of Peru will have a true shining path to a better socialist future. There were places in Lima even at the worst of the violence that did not have police protection. Local people in the neighborhoods not being covered by the police made their own groups meeting out justice. I can remember at least 4-5 stories of people being strung up by the street lights after being found stealing food. They were killed for being hungry.

@Surgé Land Peru has a very interesting history and though it gets the stereotype of having figure head politics and history which is true in many cases I really suggest digging deep into it.Peru of course had some big ML and Leftist theorist and a often overlooked semi socialist government from 1968-1975.And beyond the Shining Path you have some really crazy and cool political ideologies and parties in Peru.Frepap and the Etnocaceristas are just one treasure trove of the modern movements that are independent to Peru.Frepap being a weird religious movement that believe that Peru is the next Israel and the Etnocaceristas being my favorite thing to have come out of modern Peru.Basically Neo Incan Revivalist Socialist.And there’s a lot of pre Colombian stuff and modern science and lots of geography and nature to study about Peru.

I'm a Scot & was living & working in Spain during the period of Sendero's rise and fall so had good access to Spanish language information about what was going on in Peru which I followed closely. Compared to the UK Spain's media was much more international & Latin America was naturally well covered. Somehow the Shining Path was one of the groups that took part in the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement, which was an international meeting where 17 parties from around the world synthesized and codified what Marxism-Leninism-Maoism was.

Another RIM member that would go just as nutso but less murdery would be the Revolutionary Communist Party USA, also known as the Avakianists nowadays after Bob Avakian's cult of personality.

That was a hell of a video, and it's disgusting that even the one kinda positive thing they sort of might have done was probably a complete accident.

I'm Peruvian and I thank you for such a well-made video, not many foreigners know what happened here so imo this video in English helps to spread information. I also want to talk about my experience. I'm 19 years old so I didn't live through this but I've always heard about my family's experience in Lima during that time (car bombs, etc). Fortunately, my family has encouraged me to learn about what happened outside Lima, I went to "El lugar de la memoria" which it's a museum about the armed conflict and in my school they taught us about it too.

As a Peruvian, this is a pretty accurate video. Some of my family members died during the peak of the war, and even my mom was affected by the 1992 Tarata bombing. Just to make some things clear, nowadays, both the right and left (even the revolutionary left) see Shining Path and MRTA (another terror organization) with bad eyes, since they were also mainly driven by drug trafficking, instead of actually wanting something better for the people. I like how you presented this. You give a greater focus on what happened in the countryside, what was the "Gonzalo Thought" and putting how harsh the people had it not just from the Shining path, but the state as well. Peru still is a centralized country with very little regard for the countryside or rain forest, it's history still centralized and the perspective is from one middle class person in the capital and demonizing Gonzalo before explaining why he was bad still give credibility and helps to further red scares ramblings from the establishment. As a child of a Peruvian immigrant who never had to stop hearing about my mother's struggles to come here. Her story in short: went to a Catholic private school in Chimboté, abuelo was an engineer who made it out of Machú Pichu village, my abuela, a beauty queen turned librarian/mother/wife. They had a tutor, cook, nanny and the Shinning Path was still putting car bombs on magnets connected to stop lights, bombing innocent civilians. My mom still remembers seeing the day they captured Guzman and the funeral of 200 caskets being carried up the mountains of Peru. My abuelo, had five kids and a wife and still had these worries reguardless of his success. Not to mention the cartel girls at my mom's school (all girls).
My mom, sent to New York City by herself on a plane to meet only my tio who was somewhat settled here with no job and no papers (just connections from couch to couch), my mom was 17 and did not know any English and had $200...met my struggling dad who came from a childhood and adolescence of alcoholics, murder, gambling addiction, and unsupportive parents of his art and an abusive household (emotionally and physically). Sad to say if it wasn't for the terrorism my mom experienced I wouldnt be here, but even sadder to get older and see from the outside what pain, fear and struggle my family experienced and what it took to get here.

Sendero Luminoso was something I remember hearing about on the news growing up, not ever really understanding what they were about. In times of revolution, or of mere political discontent, it's tragic to see how often the moment is co-opted by one mediocre opportunistic narcissist or another, whether in the jungles of Peru, or ballot boxes across the US.

Not much is taught about terrorism in schools, I am 19 years old, and I can say that very few young contemporaries to me really know EVERYTHING THAT WAS SUFFERED at that time. Wow I am amazed by the quality and effort you have put into this video, it is the first one in another language, rather than Spanish, that truly explain what happened in my home country. The only thing i would add it would be: the importance of the first wife of Guzman, who basically started the war with her own hands, and the swift on the policy towards the armed population, because by the 90's the military started to support the armed groups of towns people instead of punish them, and this actually works, I remembered perfectly how the military and the population started to fight together against the Senderos.

I read an okay book about shining path, and the most accessible in English, so I've been looking forwards to this video ever since I heard you were making it. I was hesistant to watch this video since a lot of peruvian channels regarding peruvian politics/ history tend to have a heavy right leaning narrative and foreigners tend to romanticize the situation. Really interested in this not just for academic reasons, but also because I run a shadowrun game, and I'm sending my players into Peru on a run. They're running against the cartels, and in shadowrun, the Shining Path control most of the interior of the nation, meaning they're inevitably going to cross paths. Throwing ideologically hardline people against in it for the money mercenaries operating against the Shining Path in their home terrain is quite fun, and I hope this helps me portray them with some nuance, in addition to learning the history behind the group.

Edit: Huh, the latifundium concept is actually really in sync with shadowrun, where the idea of corporate and private extraterritoriality was a main driving force in turning the world into a corporate hellhole.

God that massacre deep dive was brutal, it's good to hear you get emotional in your voice about it.

Huge fan of them and their politics especially. This video was made around 1990. They likely only heard a romanticized view of shining path. And they prolly ignored the criticism as if it were just the same people who call Che a mass murderer and Fidel an evil Hitler like dictator. They made this before they got rich. And before the internet was what it is today. It's understandable that they were ill informed but with good intentions. Not to mention Zack was like 20 years old. This video never got much attention even from metal fans. Only hard core rage fans or people specifically interested in the shining path. So there wasn't much need to issue a big formal apology.

@davisoneill hm, ok you say i dont have understanding of what I´m talking, man im literally peruvian and i´ve lived here my whole life, i´ve studied about this whole situation since i was little and i´ve always treat everything in a neutral way, my whole family lived those times, and they got affected by both parts, also, Abimael lived a ctually kinda rich life when he hired the people in rural areas to do the dirty work of killing their own people, with terrible massacres such as Luccanamarca, this people were mosnters, they crushed the babie´s heads in the ground, they adoctrinated the little children to kill people, they cut the tongues of the "soplones", they setted on fire complete villages, and they traumatized people for life, and u think they are good people? Something that happened to a friend of my dad who lived in Mexico in the 80 was that guys from sendero luminoso went to his business, told him that knew in what town his family lives and force him to make “donations”to the cause... yeah extortion. I have no idea how widespread that was or if it was just some elaborate scam that my dad friend suffered.

Very interesting video, I'd love to get your take on Mexican leftism. It'd be interesting to get an outsider's view, especially with how similar Peruvian history seems to be up until the 1900s. The nearest thing to the shining path is the EPR, though they've hurt significantly less people, avoid random killings, are actually mestizo/indigenous, and are very much decentralized. Personally, I think that mexican leftists, whether they're trotskyist, magonist, maoist, or vague indigenous-libertarian Marxist, are pretty good at working together, at least since the cold war.

A small correction. Surquillo was mentioned at 58:41 as one of Lima's most upscale neighborhoods. This is not true. Surquillo is known as a poor and somewhat dangerous area surrounded by more wealthy and upscale areas. It's not Callao, but everyone knows not to cruise through there at night. Did you mean Surco? Respectfully, the borders in Lima are pretty pronounced. I've been living here for 7 years. Surquillo is not Miraflores. Yes, there has been some recent gentrification on the very edge, but nobody brags about living in Surquillo. My cuñada got hit with a smash and grab there. Everybody knows dude. I thought the video was great, and just that part surprised me a little. Doesn't take away from the whole story any though.

Surquillo is one of Lima's nicer neighborhoods, sure it's dangerous in the sense that you can get mugged there (like pretty much everywhere in Lima), but it isn't poor.

just wanted to note that i find it weird how the amount of women who died of something always get listed separately like its somehow worse, like killing people is clearly horrible and killing pregnant people is maybe worse because they are less able to defend themselves, also if ppl are exclusively killing women that would qualify as misogynist so therefore maybe worse but as a women i feel weird about women getting handled as somehow "worse or more cruel murder or death"(i hear the same language in accidents a lot as well).

what I learned from this video is that the shining path are exactly what they appear to be, some feedback tho, after u covered the massacre I didn't really care about the polling data, I just felt tired and sad, it mighta been better to put the in depth look into the massacre last, good video tho, the evidence is well presented as always and the phrase "old fashioned detective work" was charming

Obviously the Shining Path sounds like exactly what I thought they were. Groups like this are a cancer on the left. And at a time where people could have used what they pretended to be. @Red Andre i mean, not overwhelmingly positive. There is still a large amount of people who are in the "he destroyed the economy" kind of thing (granted, mostly costeños and limeños). Better than 5 years ago sure, but i think is still a lot of negative view of him. I remembered that there was a lot controversy when "Revolucion y tierra" hit theatres

honestly I clicked on the video thinking that this was pro-shining path, and I just wanted to be pissed off about it because I hate SP, but I had a great suprise, althought it was hard to watch. It's nice that a video like this exist because I have seen a bunch of non peruvians who support shining path actions and it's incredibly annoying. Also, one of the most horrible things that Sendero did was comitt genocide against ashanika people. That says a lot coming from a group whose whole idiology is around a white savior.

Shining Path was formed by poor peasants, workers, university students, who developed an armed struggle guided by PCP against armed forces. They pretended to take the power, but Guzman and central comitee were detained. They began to fence Lima, the capital, and they had liberated zones in the country all around the peruvian territory. They achieved something other guerrillas in Latin American couldn´t. It was a fourth generation war, an unconventional war. I think this is the kind of war that there will be in many countries in all the world in the next years. All the best intelligence offices have studied the people war in Peru. World Economical Forum, International Monetary Fund, BlackRock, all the corporations and their intelligence stuff know this.
