Following the band's dissolution, singer and guitarist Guy Picciotto, guitarist Eddie Janney, and drummer Brendan Canty formed One Last Wish with Embrace alumnus Michael Hampton. The three later joined former Rites bassist Mike Fellows for a quasi-reincarnation of Rites of Spring named Happy Go Licky, releasing an LP/CD of various live concert recordings though never producing any studio work. Picciotto and Canty eventually teamed up with the former Embrace singer Ian MacKaye (owner of the band’s label, Dischord Records) in Fugazi.
Rites of Spring was the band’s self-titled debut album from 1985. Its twelve songs were recorded at Inner Ear Studios in February of 1985, and released on vinyl in June of that year as Dischord Records #16. The album was rereleased on CD and cassette in 1987, with an additional track from the same session, "Other Way Around", as well as the four songs from the Rites' follow-up EP, All Through a Life, Dischord #22. The CD and cassette originally retained the number "16" while the 1991 repress, as well as the 2001 remastered version of the same seventeen songs, were numbered "16CD" and given the new title End on End.
The band are named after Igor Stravinsky's famous ballet composition entitled The Rite of Spring/Le Sacre du printemps. The piece is widely dissonant and the context of the ballet is extremely bleak, revolving around pagan rituals.

No it never seemed all that much to see
But now it feels so real
Feels so real to me
But now it feels so much
Feels so much to see
Is this the,
I've seen the color of this room?
Is this the,
The first time?
Yes, I had a taste but I did not swallow
And if I went it was just to follow
And now a question was asked of me
But now there's a question being asked of me
Is this the,
The first time
I've seen the size of these walls?
Is this the,
The first time?
Yes.
Now
I'm the angry son
Everything I've learned was wrong
I'm the burning door
Once I'm opened I can't be closed
I found a hidden wheel
And it rolls to reveal that
I'm the angry son
I'm the angry son
The lyrics of Rites of Spring's song Hidden Wheel offer a deep exploration of the human experience of growth and change in life. The song opens with the singer reflecting on a previously unimportant aspect of their surroundings that, through newfound awareness, has become vividly real and consequential. This revelation highlights a broader theme, suggesting that individuals undergo moments of enlightenment throughout their lives, where they suddenly understand that which had been hidden from them or that they had previously overlooked. The lyrics seem to suggest that such human experiences of awakening lead to a greater appreciation of the world's richness and complexity, but they also generate innumerable questions that bewilder and unsettle.
In the second verse, the lyricist recounts a past experience of lacking personal agency or conviction. The singer had merely followed others and not made independent decisions. The subsequent reflection deepens the song's thematic exploration because it exposes that such moments can be opportunities for personal growth and eventual autonomy. The chorus then repeats, amplifying the song's message that the newfound awareness has so considerably altered the singer's relationship with reality that it feels like the first time, deepening their sense of who they are but also creating confusion as old assumptions and perceptions are cast aside.
The final verse signals an evolution in the singer's perspective, announcing that "now" they are the "angry son," and that everything they had learned was "wrong." These lyrics suggest that personal growth and change can incite righteous anger towards societal or systemic factors that had previously been overlooked. The metaphor of a "hidden wheel" suggests an underlying structure to life that is finally being revealed, and the singer takes on a new sense of purpose with the realization that they can never again fully return to the assumptions of their past.
