Guilt Will Get You Anyway
Ritual Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
(of) spending my life like this
(of) seeing your words pouring in the sand.
I’m not impressed.
Teardrops dripping from your chin.
You’re not the only one who lives in sin.
You’ve claimed to be a virgin since the day you saw the light.
We are the first to die.
Washing hands in verity.
Drinking from cognition.
Your name is purity
and guilt will get you anyway.
Hand in hand we walk away.
We feed the fire everyday.
Hand in hand we walk away.
Guilt will get us anyway.
The lyrics to Ritual's song Guilt Will Get You Anyway speak to the experience of feeling unfulfilled and unsatisfied with one's own life. The singer is tired of feeling like they are going through the motions and not truly living. They are also frustrated with the way others perceive them and the words they say, which are just as fleeting as writing in the sand. The singer sees through the facade of those who claim to be pure and virginal and points out the universal experience of sin. The singer acknowledges their own dark soul, but recognizes that others share this darkness too.
However, the singer also tries to find some sense of clarity and truth in their life. They wash their hands in verity and drink from cognition. They seek to align themselves with a sense of purity and truth, even if it is just in the form of someone's name. Yet, the singer also recognizes that guilt is inevitable and will catch up with them eventually. They walk away hand in hand with another person, constantly feeding the fire of guilt that will eventually consume them both.
Overall, the song speaks to the tension between the desire for fulfillment and the inescapable nature of guilt. It also comments on how others present themselves in misleading ways and how everyone shares the experience of sin and darkness.
