Bittersweet Symphony
Riverdale Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Trying to make ends meet
You're a slave to the money then you die
I'll take you down the only road that I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
Where all the veins meet, yeah

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Well I never prayed
But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life
Trying to make ends meet
Trying to find some money then you die

No change, I can change
I can change, I can change
But I'm here in my mold
I am here in my mold
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next

I can't change my mold
No, no, no, no, no

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Bittersweet Symphony" by Riverdale Cast feat. Ashleigh Murray and Camila Mendes explore the complex and often contradictory nature of life. The phrase "bittersweet symphony" refers to the mixture of joy and sadness that characterizes human existence. The song reflects on the struggle to survive and make ends meet, highlighting the feeling of being trapped in a cycle where one becomes a slave to money and eventually dies. The line "I'll take you down the only road that I've ever been down" suggests a sense of resignation and being stuck in a repetitive cycle.

The lyrics also delve into the idea of personal identity and the challenges of change. The repeated line "No change, I can change" expresses a desire for transformation but also acknowledges the difficulty of breaking free from established patterns and molds. The song conveys the paradoxical experience of feeling like a million different people from one day to the next, unable to completely change one's core self or circumstances.

When I heared the song first, I thougt the four girls was singing it.
I'm watching the TV-show with German voices, so I don't know how the original voices sound like, except the songs.
But when I heared this version at first, I thought following:
Josy: Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life
Veronica: Trying to make ends meet, you're a slave to the money then you die
Cheryl: I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down (it sounds very, VERY like the German Cheryl)
Betty: You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet, yeah.

Because for me, this four voices in the song sound so different, and otherwise so simillar to their German speakers.
