Shadows
Robb Nash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another wasted day it seems
A tragedy, a tragedy
Watching all my fading dreams
Escaping me, escaping me

And all that I wanted was someone to tell me it's okay
But I waited oh I waited
When my shadow's all that you see
When my shadow's bigger than me
Tell me where did I go so wrong

Another day a week a year
So rapidly, rapidly
Falling closer to your fear
Like gravity, gravity

And all that you want is someone to tell you it's okay
So I'll say it, oh I'll say it

When my shadow's all that you see
When my shadow's bigger than me
Tell me where did I go so wrong

Too long the darkest days have covered me
This shadow isn't what I wanna be
So I'll face the sun and make it follow me

When my shadow's all that you see

When my shadow's bigger than me
Tell me where did I go so wrong

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Robb Nash's song "Shadows" are about the difficulties of life and how it can seem like all of our dreams are fading away. The opening lines illustrate a sense of disappointment, a feeling that the time spent in a day seems like a waste with nothing accomplished. The repetition of the word “tragedy” emphasizes the frustration and disappointment of the singer.

The lyrics then move on to a broader perspective, describing the passage of time in days, weeks, and years, and how it feels like we are falling closer to our fears, like gravity. This fear of falling is linked to the need for reassurance and support from people around us, wishing that someone could tell us that everything is going to be okay. The repetition of the phrase “all that you want is someone to tell you it's okay” underlines this desire for comfort and validation.

The lyrics then lead into the chorus, where the singer asks the audience to reflect on the times where they have been dwarfed by their troubles, where their shadow looms larger than they do. The singer asks, “Tell me where did I go so wrong?” which could mean that the circumstances of life can feel overwhelming, and it can be difficult to pinpoint the reason for that.

In the final verse, the receiver shifts from himself to the audience. The singer acknowledges that the darkest days have covered him, and he does not wish to become that shadow – he wants to face the sun and make it follow him. This last verse is a message of hope, that despite the struggles and hardships we face, we can still overcome them, and our shadows don't have to define us.

I remember when you came to my school a couple years ago. I broke down crying, mostly because I had a suicide note in my pocket at the time. When I first sat down I thought to myself "oh, this will be a waste of time." but I have never been so wrong. Thank you so, so much for what you've done. You're the reason I'm not dead, and I can't thank you enough.
