Old Before I Die
Robbie Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's taking me to places I should never have been
She's showing me faces I should never have seen
Well these are strange days we're living in today
"C'est la vie", I say

I hope I'm old before I die
I hope I live to relive the days gone by
I hope I'm old before I die
Well tonight I'm gonna live for today
So come along for the ride
I hope I'm old before I die

She's not feeling stable, she's unable to breath
Her heart's beating faster, so I ask her to leave
These are strange days we're living in today
Am I straight or gay?

I hope I'm old before I die
I hope I live to see the day the Pope gets high
I hope I'm old before I die
Well tonight I'm gonna live for today
So come along for the ride
I hope I'm old before I die

While these are strange days we're living in today
"C'est la vie", I say

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Robbie Williams’ Old Before I Die revolve around the theme of living life to the fullest and enjoying the moment. The first verse talks about a woman who is taking the singer to places he should never have been and showing him faces he should never have seen. These experiences are strange and unconventional, but the singer remains nonchalant and says “C’est la vie” which means “that's life” in French. He hopes that he gets to grow old before he dies and that he gets to relive the days gone by. The concept of aging is juxtaposed against the idea of living in the present and cherishing each moment.

In the second verse, the woman is not feeling stable and has trouble breathing. The singer asks her to leave and again talks about these strange days that we are living in. He questions his own sexuality and wonders if he is straight or gay. Once again, he hopes to live long enough to see the day the Pope gets high, highlighting the absurdity of life and how unpredictable it can be.

Overall, the song has a fun and carefree vibe, encouraging listeners to enjoy themselves and not take life too seriously. The lyrics also touch on the idea of growing old and not having any regrets. The phrase “I hope I’m old before I die” is a reminder to not waste any time and fully embrace life.

@Robert-tl2vg

Are you saying people pushing 50 are the only ones who should be able to remember this song?

Probably lost in the shuffle this came out at a time where there were a ton of great pop hits being produced in the UK, sadly the music industry has since turned to producing cookie-cutter songs with generic singers more aimed at appealing to teenage hormones than anyone with ears.the 60s-90s was a golden era for music.

My guess is that this video is not viewable outside Europe.
