Not A Drop Of Rain
Robert Earl Keen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Streets are almost empty, shops are all closed down
There's not a soul left in the bar to tell my troubles to
Think I'll walk down to the river that runs just south of town
I hate like hell when there ain't nothin' left to do
But stand beneath the river bridge and listen for the train
It's been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

Well, I broke down in December, I headed for the coast
I thought the wind and water would elevate my mind
I surfaced in the springtime feelin' like a ghost
Missin' more than ever the things I left behind
Now I'm standin' on this riverbank and still cannot explain
It's been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

My bag is full of letters, unopened and unread
I'm sure they'd tell the story of worry and of form
My heart is beating heavy with all we left unsaid
And I swear to you I never meant you any harm
This sacrifice and compromise could never stand the strain
It's been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

Tonight I'll close my eyes again, try to see your face
Listen for your voice to tell me it's alright to sleep
Convince myself I'll wake up in another time and place
Knowin' all the while that it's a promise I can't keep
A string of broken promises, another link of chain
It's been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

The children on the playground, the lovers in the shade
Remind me of a life and time that feels more like a dream
When the sound of love and laughter was the music that we played
As we lay beside the waters of a never ending stream
Now the stream has gone to hiding, the dream lives on in vain
It's been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

The clouds are building slowly on the skyline to the east
The wind and dust are dancing like the devil across the lake
I could try to find a bottle or try to find a priest
Salvation won't be traveling either road I take

So I turn my collar to the wind that echoes this refrain
It's been a long hot summer, not a drop of rain

Overall Meaning

Robert Earl Keen’s song Not A Drop Of Rain is a melancholic piece that tells the story of a man who is alone, seeking solace from a long hot summer that has brought him no rain. He walks to the river south of town to escape his troubles, yet the river has dried up due to the drought, and he stands under the bridge listening for the train. The singer reflects on his journey, how he headed to the coast after breaking down in December, looking for a fresh start, but nothing seems to have changed. He carries letters in his bag from someone he has left behind, perhaps a lover or a family member, that he has not read, but he still feels heavy-hearted for leaving things unsaid.

The song’s lyrics touch on themes of regret, emptiness, and the search for meaning. The singer’s life feels like a dream, but now he is living a reality that he cannot escape. He tries to convince himself that he will wake up in another time and place, but he knows it is an impossible promise to keep. The last verse of the song sees the clouds slowly building up, giving the singer a glimmer of hope. However, his search for salvation will not come from any road he takes, as he turns his collar to the wind, echoing the refrain that it has been a long hot summer with not a drop of rain.

It's all so clear now. What we do as humans directs what God does. We leave what we love and can't get it all back. Not a drop of rain. He gives us the power so we understand a little. Not a drop of rain. He makes it all. except our conception of his idea. He leaves that up to us.

Wishing all well in this thread. But this song references life, lived and reflections - great. Beyond that, the life and reflections don't blame anyone. Why is it the comments turn to purpose of justifying a personal referendum? I live in Austin, have for years and wife born here. It has changed without a doubt, if you have traveled- the world has also. I am not fond of it, but I imagine the rancher or farmer felt the same 100 years ago....even the native people. Our rights of control and justification is clearly self driven. All said 61 days over 100 in Austin on this day "and not a drop of rain"....wish you all well.
