Everybody Wants To Rule The World
Robert Glasper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Welcome to your life
There's no turning back
Even while we sleep
We will find you

Acting on your best behaviour
Turn your back on Mother Nature
Everybody wants to rule the world
Everybody, everybody (who am I?)

It's my own design
It's my own remorse
Help me to decide
Help me make the

Most of freedom and of pleasure
Nothing ever lasts forever (nothing is gonna last)
Everybody wants to rule the world (oh)
Everybody, everybody (everybody wanna rule the world)

There's a room where the light won't find you
Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down (come tumbling down)
When they do, I'll be right behind you

So glad we almost made it
So sad we had to fade it
Everybody wants to rule the world

Yeah, uh
As we move through time and space
And we all try to find our place
So many rulers, but who leads with grace? Yeah

Greet 'em with the freedom, when I see 'em, yo, I read 'em
Scriptures of humanity, the spirit's colosseum
Step in the arena, my Medina, yo, my Mecca
Life is greener where there's texture, the meaning of the sceptre
God's rule is better, we move through your trepidation
It's a nation searching for it's foundation
Mother Nature's relation, you see agitation
So many admirables with no admiration
This is verbal vaccination, how do you react to it?
We needed Black Radio for pure Black music
The path to movement, show improve, improvement
For our homes and domes, we all had to move with
The times, as the world heals, we climb
It's no back to normal, 'cause normal don't recline
I'm a portal for rhymes, ask Shonda
I bridge tons of minds, so everyone can conquer
One rule, one mantra, you got me, then I got ya
The posture of a Rasta
I reconsider, I re-evolve
I reconstruct, I see the I, we in all
We got understanding, then there's no need to fall
You know I got bars, so there's no need to brawl
Tryna change hearts like the angels did Saul
And pierce the Devil with the truth like Paul, that's all

Welcome to your life, mmm

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Robert Glasper, Lalah Hathaway, and Common's "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" suggest that the listener is now entering into a new phase of life for which there is no turning back. The song then delves into the multiple layers of human behavior, with a particular emphasis on the concept of control. It suggests that we are always being watched and that we have to be on our best behavior because everyone wants to rule the world in their own unique way. Common reflects on the theme of leadership, asking "So many rulers, but who leads with grace?" and suggests that a better world can be created if we work together and understand different perspectives.

The song also highlights the idea that we are ultimately responsible for the creation of our own destinies. The lyrics, "It's my own design, it's my own remorse / Help me to decide, help me make the most of freedom and of pleasure" articulate that we hold the power to shape our lives, but that we must be mindful of how we go about achieving our goals since nothing lasts forever. Furthermore, the bridge of the song repeats the phrase "so glad we almost made it/ so sad we had to fade it" suggesting that we must cherish the moments we have in life since they are fleeting.

Overall, the song is characterized by its philosophical musings, thoughtful reflections on the human experience, and emphasis on individual autonomy and responsibility.

Married with a lack of vision
Everybody wants to rule the world
Say that you'll never never never never need it
One headline why believe it?
Everybody wants to rule the world
All for freedom and for pleasure
Nothing ever lasts for ever
Everybody wants to rule the world

I usually HATE it when my favorite 80s songs are covered....NOT THIS TIME! This is a master class in covering beloved hits! Lalah is a vocal powerhouse and Robert is a classy genius! 😍

@trinitodd

So true Dana, music has a direct link to our hearts, and if that cover doesn’t evoke a similar feeling to the original it comes off as extremely underwhelming. I got lost in their rendition. ❤️🎵❤️🎶
