What You Waiting For
Robert Palmer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Aah, how I loved you
I was unable then to say what I mean
Everything that I say and do
Everything that I am includes you
Everything seems so clear, now that I love you
Come on, there's no time to stop
Baby, what you waiting for
You were made for me, tailor made for me, yeah
Darling, it's not our choice, who we fall for
Come on girl, take my hand, see what we do
There are some things you can't ignore
Love and devotions won't conform
But it's not up to me or up to you
Vanity's, ideals demand were satisfied
With what love plans
You were made for me, tailor made for me
There are something you can't ignore
Love and emotions won't conform
So let me tell you first-hand how much I love you
Fantasy may be grand but it's above you
Say you like the real thing more
Baby, what you waiting for
You were made for me, tailor made for me
You were made for me, custom built for me, yeah
You were made for me, custom made for me
You were made for me, tailor made for me
In these lyrics, Robert Palmer is expressing his love for his partner whom he had held close the night before. He admits that he was unable to express what he meant at that moment but now, everything seems clear to him because of his love for her. He urges his partner not to waste any more time and take his hand so they can explore their love together.
Palmer acknowledges that sometimes, love does not follow our planned choices and we can't help who we fall for. He tells his partner that love and devotion do not conform to societal ideals and we should not ignore our emotions when it comes to love. In essence, he wants his partner to choose him freely and genuinely, despite the societal demands placed on them.
Finally, Palmer reminds his partner that although fantasy may be grand, it cannot compare to the real thing. He urges her to choose the genuine love that they have rather than chasing after unrealistic expectations. Through this song, Palmer expresses a deep love and desire for his partner, urging her to embrace their love and not wait any longer.
