I
Robin Trower Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There beneath the diamond sky
Caviar and the moon light wine
She hasn't yet made up her mind
If she'll take me

See my love it's stoned indeed
Got my future at your feet baby
The simple life!
You can take me

And every day gets stronger
Everyday it grows and grows
I can't wait much longer

Round and round in dreams I go
Set me free baby or tie the bow
Up or down let me know
Oh don't ignore me!

And everyday gets stronger
And everyday it grows and grows
I can't wait much longer

Get my coat and I'll catch the train
Make my way down to New Orleans

Tryin' to save!
Oh to console me

Overall Meaning

The song I Can by Robin Trower is a romantic ballad expressing a man's desire to be accepted by his love interest. The song begins with the line "There beneath the diamond sky" which can be interpreted as a beautiful but distant and untouchable sky. This sets the scene for the man's feelings towards his love interest, who he sees as being out of his reach like the diamond sky. However, he is willing to offer her the finer things in life such as "caviar and moonlight wine" to win her over, even though she hasn't decided if she wants to be with him. As the song progresses, he expresses his willingness to give up the complexities of life and embrace the simple life with her, suggesting that she has the power to shape his future. The chorus "And every day gets stronger, and everyday it grows and grows, I can't wait much longer" reinforces his desire for her love and affection which continues to grow stronger by the day.

The second verse suggests that the man is emotionally invested in the relationship as he is "stoned indeed" by his love for her. He lays his future down at her feet and asks her to take him, showing his vulnerability and dependence on her. The bridge "Round and round in dreams I go, Set me free baby or tie the bow, Up or down let me know, Oh don't ignore me!" indicates that he is uncertain about where he stands with her and he wants her to make her intentions clear. He is willing to make changes and sacrifices in his life to be with her. The last verse shows the man leaving town to try and get over his heartache by going down to New Orleans, but he acknowledges that nothing can console him except the love of his interest.

The night before my younger brother died, 58 yrs old, on 1/11/2019, upon leaving the hospital I jumped into my car and this song started playing, I freaked out, took a quick pic of the screen on my car and still have it on my cell phone. My brother and I would listen to Robin Trower often particularly when we were "chilling" back in the 70's. A song which will be with me forever here and also when I see my brother again. Thank you for sharing, it made my day! Joe
