Long Misty Days
Robin Trower Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long misty days
Told me they would change their ways
Once in a while will come my way

The thrill is gone
Misty days linger on and on
Once in a while is here to stay
We feed this fire
Lovers in a nursery rhyme
The words belong to you
And the melody was mine

Long misty days
Told me in a million ways
Once in a while will come my way

Oh how the moon
Shining at a lonely room
Weeping willow cry for me

Sing me a song
Simple as the day is long
I love someone crying to be free

And take the sky
And tell me if the moon is blue
And if it's meant to be
That my melody was used

Long misty days
Told me in a million ways
Once in a while will come my way

Long misty days

Told me they would change the ways
Once in a while is here to stay

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Robin Trower's song "Long Misty Days" can be interpreted as a reflection on the ups and downs of life, and the fleeting moments of happiness that we experience. The songwriter seems to be saying that although life can be difficult and full of misty, uncertain days, occasionally we are blessed with moments of clarity and purpose. These moments are represented in the song by the phrase "Once in a while will come my way". However, even though these moments of joy are fleeting, they are important and worth cherishing whenever they occur.

The song also touches on the themes of love and loss. The line "We feed this fire/Lovers in a nursery rhyme/The words belong to you/And the melody was mine" seems to be a reference to a past relationship that has since ended. The songwriter reflects on the passion and intensity of that love, but also recognizes that it is now just a memory. The final verse of the song shifts focus to the external world, with the use of natural imagery ("how the moon" and "weeping willow") to create a sense of melancholy and sadness. The song ends on a note of resignation - although "once in a while" we may experience moments of happiness, the misty days will always linger on.

The memories come flooding back as soon as this song begins. A young life lived at a much slower pace. When you wanted to talk to a friend, you went and knocked on their door and telephones were on the kitchen wall were they belonged. Smoked cheap weed, went to lots of great concerts and the friends I had then are the best I will ever have in my lifetime. Life was grand. Then life interrupted my youth. Oh, those were the days my friends.
