4th Time Around
Robyn Hitchcock Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When she said,
"Don't waste your words, they're just lies,"
I cried she was deaf
And she worked on my face until breaking my eyes
Then said, "What else you got left?"
It was then that I got up to leave
But she said, "Don't forget
Everybody must give something back
For something they get."

I stood there and hummed
I tapped on her drum and asked her how come
And she buttoned her boot
And straightened her suit
Then she said, "Don't get cute."
So I forced my hands in my pockets
And felt with my thumbs
And gallantly handed her
My very last piece of gum

She threw me outside
I stood in the dirt where ev'ryone walked
And after finding I'd
Forgotten my shirt
I went back and knocked.
I waited in the hallway, she went to get it
And I tried to make sense
Out of that picture of you in your wheelchair
That leaned up against...

Her Jamaican rum
And when she did come, I asked her for some
She said, "No, dear."
I said, "Your words aren't clear
You'd better spit out your gum."
She screamed till her face got so red
Then she fell on the floor
And I covered her up and then
Thought I'd go look through her drawer

And, when I was through
I filled up my shoe
And brought it to you
And you, you took me in
You loved me then
You didn't waste time
And I, I never took much

I never asked for your crutch
Now don't ask for mine

Overall Meaning

The song "4th Time Around" by Robyn Hitchcock is a track from the album "Robyn Sings" released in 2002. The song is a cover of Bob Dylan's original song from his 1966 album "Blonde on Blonde". The song is believed to be a parody of another Dylan song "Norwegian Wood" by The Beatles. While the song appears to be a conversation between the singer and a woman, the lyrics are shrouded in mystery and ambiguity.

The first verse of the song presents the woman's perspective who advises the singer not to waste words because they are just lies. The singer responds to this by interpreting her as deaf and she works on his face until she breaks his eyes. The woman then asks what else he has got left, indicating that the singer has no more words. The woman says everybody must give something back for something they receive. This statement could be a criticism of the singer's behavior towards her. The chorus line "fourth time around" suggests that the singer has been through this scenario several times before.

In the second verse, the singer taps on the woman's drum, which could be a metaphor for her heart. He asks her how come she is this way, and she does not respond positively. The man tries to offer her some gum from his pocket as a peace offering, which she throws outside. The man returns, having forgotten his shirt, and waits in the hallway while the woman goes to retrieve the shirt. The man tries to make sense of a picture of someone in a wheelchair leaning against a bottle of Jamaican rum. The woman arrives and does not offer the man any rum, and the interaction ends badly.
