They are most famous for creating a string of immensely popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, during what is considered the golden age of the medium. Five of their shows were outstanding successes: Oklahoma! (their first collaboration); Carousel; South Pacific; The King and I; and The Sound of Music. Among the many accolades they garnered were thirty-four Tony Awards; fifteen Academy Awards; two Pulitzer Prizes; two Grammy Awards; and two Emmy Awards.

The pair wrote nine musicals together and collaborated on a musical film, State Fair. As producers, they also brought Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun to the stage [1], leaving an indelible mark on American musical theater and a legacy of successes that has never been equaled. Their joint efforts continued over a twenty-year period, until Hammerstein's death in 1960.

THE NBC ORCHESTRA WAS TREMENDOUS SPECIALLY UNDER TOSCANINI.

@@theodorevx I first heard the tune "No Other Love" in 1956, when I was 6 and saw Victory At Sea on Australian TV with my late dad Bob. He served in the Royal Australian Navy as a radar operator, in the South Pacific on the cruiser HMAS Hobart and on the destroyers HMAS Quiberon (Leyte Gulf) and HMAS Bataan (in Japan, during the surrender and occupation). Usually as part of a joint U.S. and Australian task-force. I never forgot it and always thought it was the "Victory at Sea" theme - until the series was rescreened by the ABC in 1995, as part of the 50th anniversary of the war's end, Good to see that the series is available on You Tube. The tune still enthralls me, as a classic tango.
