Along Came Mary
Roger Hodgson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Was alone then along came Mary, hair of gold and lips like cherries
Was amazed when she stole my thunder, filled my world with the ways of wonder

Come away come away with me, Far away where the eyes can't see
Come away to another time, Pardon me if you lose your mind

Who are you now? Who makes the rules?
Follow your heart and get back....
Won't you get back....
Oh get back

Was alone then along came Mary, hair of gold and lips like cherries
Was amazed when she stole my thunder, Filled my world with the ways of wonder

Come away come away with me, Far away where the eyes can't see
Come away to another time, Pardon me if you lose your mind

Pardon me if you lose your mind
Pardon me if you lose, oh if you lose your mind

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Roger Hodgson's "Along Came Mary" introduces us to the main characters: Hodgson, who "was alone," and Mary, the woman who "along came." Mary is depicted in a way that is almost ethereal; her "hair of gold and lips like cherries" suggest a rare and pure beauty that has the power to captivate and enthrall. When she enters Hodgson's life, she "fills [his] world with the ways of wonder," suggesting that she brings with her a sense of magic or otherworldliness that imbues everything around her with meaning and beauty.

The chorus of the song invites Mary to "Come away...far away where the eyes can't see." This seemingly innocent invitation might suggest that Hodgson wants to escape with Mary to a place where they can be alone and free from the prying eyes of the world. However, the second half of the chorus--"Pardon me if you lose your mind"--hints that there may be something darker at play. Is Hodgson inviting Mary to join him on a journey into madness, or are the two of them simply forging a path that only they can understand?

The final verse of the song poses a series of questions--"Who are you now? Who makes the rules?"--that suggest a deep sense of confusion and uncertainty. However, Hodgson's advice to "follow your heart and get back" suggests that he believes in the power of love and human connection to overcome the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the world. The song ends with a repetition of the first verse, suggesting that Mary has had a profound impact on Hodgson's life and that he will always remember her with a sense of awe and wonder.

[Intro - Princess Elizabeth's 1940 wartime broadcast]

"I can truthfully say to you all,
that we children at home are full of cheerfulness and courage.
We are trying to do all we can to help our gallant sailors, soldiers and airmen.
And when peace comes, remember, it will be for us, the children of today,
to make the world of tomorrow a better and happier place.
My sister is by my side and we are both going to say goodnight to you.
Come on, Margaret. Goodnight, children.
Goodnight, and good luck to you all."

Very much so (especially with Supertramp). But this is his finest solo piece for me. Truly classic!

@PAJA63

You probably missed out on parts of Roger's solo career. This is from "Open the Door", which you had to order from France (back when, on CD). By the way, this whole album is a must for any Supertramp fan… ;-)

@bighouse1965

I agree ! Roger nowadays plays "Death and a Zoo" and this beauty "Along came Mary" almost every concert, but I would love to hear the titelsong "Open the door" live :-)
