Greensleeves
Roger Whittaker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alas, my love, you do me wrong,
To cast me off discourteously.
For I have loved you well and long,
Delighting in your company.

[Chorus]
Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight,
Greensleeves was my heart of gold,
And who but my lady Greensleeves.

Your vows you've broken, like my heart,
Oh, why did you so enrapture me?
Now I remain in a world apart
But my heart remains in captivity.

[Chorus]

I have been ready at your hand,
To grant whatever you would crave,
I have both wagered life and land,
Your love and good-will for to have.

[Chorus]

If you intend thus to disdain,
It does the more enrapture me,
And even so, I still remain
A lover in captivity.

[Chorus]

My men were clothed all in green,
And they did ever wait on thee;
All this was gallant to be seen,
And yet thou wouldst not love me.

[Chorus]

Thou couldst desire no earthly thing,
But still thou hadst it readily.
Thy music still to play and sing;
And yet thou wouldst not love me.

[Chorus]

Well, I will pray to God on high,
That thou my constancy mayst see,
And that yet once before I die,
Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me.

[Chorus]

Ah, Greensleeves, now farewell, adieu,
To God I pray to prosper thee,
For I am still thy lover true,
Come once again and love me.

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The song Greensleeves, written by unknown authors, has been interpreted in countless ways throughout history. Roger Whittaker's version of the song is a lament to an unrequited love. The singer of the song has been cast off by his lover discourteously after a long period of devotion. The singer is left in a world apart with his heart remaining in captivity.

The singer of the song claims to have been ready and willing to do whatever his lover would ask of him, even to the extent of wagering his life and land. However, his love was not enough to keep his lover by his side. The singer seems somewhat masochistic, stating that even if his lover were to disdain him further, it would only "enrapture" him more. The final refrain of the song is a plea for his lover to return and love him once again.

There are different interpretations of the song Greensleeves, but some say that it may have been a song about King Henry VIII's unrequited love for Anne Boleyn. The song was widely popular during the 16th century and beyond, with numerous versions created by different artists throughout history. Apart from Roger Whittaker, some of the artists who have recorded the song include Elvis Presley, Jeff Beck, and Loreena McKennitt.

So, I will turn to a higher power, praying to God above,

Hoping that, before I pass away,

Thou wilt vouchsafe to love me.

So please, come back to me and show me the love that I so desperately crave.

Which album is this on? I specifically remember this version as my American Grandma Pat played it for me when I was younger. She had it on a tape, from what I remember. Which one, she never told me the name.
