He became widely known for his version of "Wind Beneath My Wings" (1982), as well as his own compositions "Durham Town (The Leavin')" (1969) and "I Don't Believe in If Anymore" (1970), his 1970 hit "New World in the Morning" and his 1975 hit "The Last Farewell" (his only single to hit the US Billboard Hot 100, making it to the Top 20).
Whittakers first chart success came in 1969 when "Durham Town (The Leavin')" was his first UK Top 20 hit. In 1970 came two follow-up hits, "I Don't Believe In If Anymore" (Top 10) and "New World In The Morning" (Top 20), and 1971 brought two smaller hit singles "Why" and "Mamy Blue".
Whittaker was absent from the UK singles chart until 1975, when "The Last Farewell" went Top 3, after which it was another eleven years until "Skye Boat Song" returned him to the Top 10 of the singles chart.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Whittaker had success in Germany, with German language songs produced by Nick Munro (unable to speak German at that time, Whittaker sang the songs phonetically). In time he became more fluent in German and sang and was interviewed in German on Danish television in November 2008. Whittaker retired from touring in 2013.

Although the snow covers the hope of spring
Somewhere a hill blossoms in green and gold
And there are dreams all that your heart can hold
Someday we'll meet again my love
Someday whenever the spring breaks through
Warm as the wind, soft as the kiss of snow
Lara my own, think of me now and then
God speed my love till you are mine again
You'll come to me out of the long ago
Warm as the wind soft as the kiss of snow
Till then my sweet think of me now and then
God speed my love 'til you are mine again
The lyrics of Roger Whittaker's "Somewhere My Love" convey a sense of yearning and hope for the return of a loved one. The opening lines suggest that despite the bleakness of winter and the covering of hope, there will be songs to sing and dreams to hold on to. The idea of spring brings to mind rebirth and renewal, and the hidden promise of hope beyond the snow. The metaphorical mention of a hill blossoming in green and gold is not only an image of natural beauty, but also a symbol of new beginnings and a glimmer of hope for the return of the loved one.
The song's chorus is full of longing and anticipation for the reunion of the lovers. The use of "someday" suggests the uncertainty of time and the waiting and longing that the singer feels. The mentioning of spring breaking through is a signal of new beginnings and the possibility of seeing the loved one once again. The bridge of the song intensifies the sense of pining with an address to the loved one, calling her by name and beseeching her to remember and think of the singer. The use of imagery like "warm as the wind" and "soft as the kiss of snow" convey the depth of the singer's love and desire for the other person. The closing line of the song repeats the hope for a reunion and the use of "God speed" is a prayer for the loved one's safe and swift return.
