He became widely known for his version of "Wind Beneath My Wings" (1982), as well as his own compositions "Durham Town (The Leavin')" (1969) and "I Don't Believe in If Anymore" (1970), his 1970 hit "New World in the Morning" and his 1975 hit "The Last Farewell" (his only single to hit the US Billboard Hot 100, making it to the Top 20).
Whittakers first chart success came in 1969 when "Durham Town (The Leavin')" was his first UK Top 20 hit. In 1970 came two follow-up hits, "I Don't Believe In If Anymore" (Top 10) and "New World In The Morning" (Top 20), and 1971 brought two smaller hit singles "Why" and "Mamy Blue".
Whittaker was absent from the UK singles chart until 1975, when "The Last Farewell" went Top 3, after which it was another eleven years until "Skye Boat Song" returned him to the Top 10 of the singles chart.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Whittaker had success in Germany, with German language songs produced by Nick Munro (unable to speak German at that time, Whittaker sang the songs phonetically). In time he became more fluent in German and sang and was interviewed in German on Danish television in November 2008. Whittaker retired from touring in 2013.
Morning Please Don't Come

Surely you see that my lover is sleeping
Morning please don't come
Let the night linger on
When the stars have left the sky
We must say fond goodbye
Make the night a little longer
Starshine glow a little stronger
Morning please don't come
Day don't break for you will take
My love away from me
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come
Sing sweet nightingale
Sing me a song of a night never-ending
Sing sweet nightingale
And I'll try to pretend
That tomorrow's nowhere near
And there's nothing to fear
Make the night a little longer
Morning please don't come
Starshine glow a little stronger
Morning please don't come
Day don't break for you will take
My love away from me
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come
The lyrics to Roger Whittaker's song "Morning Please Don't Come" speak to the longing to extend a moment of love and connection, to savor it for just a little bit longer. The singer, who is deeply in love, is pleading with the morning not to come and break the spell of the night. They ask the nightingale to sing them a song of a never-ending night, and they beg the morning to hold back the sun, as the arrival of the day will signal the end of their time together. The singer is caught in a moment of deep yearning and desperation, hoping to cling to the fleeting magic of the night for as long as possible.
The lyrics evoke a sense of melancholy, as the singer is aware that their happiness is only temporary. They know that when the morning comes, they will have to say goodbye to their love and return to the reality of day-to-day life. There is a sense of powerlessness, as the singer is unable to control the passage of time or the arrival of the morning. They can only plead with the universe to give them a little more time.
Overall, the lyrics to "Morning Please Don't Come" are a poignant expression of the beauty and fragility of human connection, and the profound longing to hold onto moments of love and happiness just a little bit longer.

I grew up hearing this song on an old tape of my dad's. It's so smooth, and warmly sung by the great Roger Whittaker.
