The Last Time
Rolling Stones - The Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I told you once and I told you twice
But ya never listen to my advice
You don't try very hard to please me
With what you know it should be easy

Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don't know, oh no, oh no

Well, I'm sorry girl but I can't stay
Feelin' like I do today
It's too much pain and too much sorrow
Guess I'll feel the same tomorrow

Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don't know, oh no, oh no

Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don't know, oh no, oh no

Well I told you once and I told you twice
That someone will have to pay the price
But here's a chance to change your mind
'Cause I'll be gone a long, long time

Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don't know, oh no, oh no

Last time baby
To say no more
Baby I don't know
Well I don't know
Well, I don't know
I don't know
Well, I don't know
Well, I don't know
Well, I don't know
Well, I don't know
Well, I don't know

Well, I don't know
Well, I don't know

Overall Meaning

The Rolling Stones' "The Last Time" is a song that expresses the singer's frustration with his partner's inability to listen and respond to his needs. He has already told her multiple times that she needs to try harder to please him, but she hasn't changed her behavior. The chorus, "This could be the last time," translates to the singer threatening to leave the relationship if his partner doesn't start listening to him. He doesn't want to feel the pain and sorrow that he's feeling right now, and he doesn't want to keep feeling that way in the future.

The lyrics are straightforward and simple, but they convey the message effectively. The repetition of "This could be the last time" emphasizes the gravity of the situation and increases the tension in the song. The singer is at the end of his rope, and he's tired of feeling ignored and unloved. He's giving his partner one final chance to make things right, but he's prepared to walk away if she doesn't.

I'll always be a Beatles man but I find it absolutely impossible to listen to the Stones and NOT tap my feet or move up and down. They created some of the greatest grooves I have ever heard.

Greatest Rock and Roll band ever. Had all the hits, were able to adapt with the times and yet still hold their own identity. Their brotherhood has kept them together threw thick and thin for almost 60 years. Long Live the Stones!
