1) ROME is a Luxembourgish neofolk act founded in late 2005 as the main output for the songs of Jerome Reuter and was joined by co-producer Patrick Damiani as official member in early 2008. ROME signed to the Swedish label CMI in 2006 to release an EP titled "Berlin" (June 2006) and the albums "Nera" (November 2006), "Confessions d'un voleur d'ames" (April 2007), "Masse Mensch Material" (March 2008). In 2009 ROME got signed to the german label Trisol and released the EP "To Die Among Strangers" (May 2009) and the album "Flowers From Exile" (June 2009).
In their earlier work ROME mixes influences of Industrial and Neofolk with Experimental and Electronic Pop. The traditions of (French) Chanson and (American) Folk are becoming more and more influential in their current work. In 2009 violin player Nikos Mavridis officially joined the band to further contribute to the creation of their unique sound, which they themselves refer to as Chanson Noir. Nikos left the band in late 2010 to answer the army's call and Patrick found himself more and more tied up in the work for his own professional recording studio in Germany. ROME released the EP "L'assassin" in early 2010, shortly before going into hiatus, followed by the full length "Nos chants perdus". In 2011, Jerome, the project's only real flag-bearer, recorded and released the trilogy "Die Aesthetik Der Herrschaftsfreiheit" (Trisol) and has taken up touring again with his new band mates Patrick Kleinbauer, Eric Emmel and Tom Luciani. ROME's lyrics often deal with anarchism and are demanding freedom and equal rights for all people on earth.

Chanson De Gestes
Rome Lyrics

Shaped by refusal - this sign means all
Fear no one - tame no one
For you know of the wound
Restored to youth - by rebellion
Ask no one, crush no one - each sign means grief
Each sign means murder - contempt and relief
Serve no one, blame no one - awaiting the fall
Hide yourself in mourning - in countries far
Among the snake-mouthed mothers of snow
Hide yourself in mourning - on oceans wide
14 blades - 400 blows
Serve no one, blame no one - awaiting the fall
Shaped by refusal - this sign means all
Fear no one, tame no one
For you know of the wound
Restored to youth by rebellion
Ask no one, crush no one - each sign means grief
Each sign means murder - contempt and relief
Serve no one, blame no one - awaiting the fall
To be safe, to be sound and - to be assured
I eat on and I sleep and I - know we will meet
On another day - on a quiet road - On a safer shore
Serve no one, blame no one
Fear no one, tame no one
Awaiting the fall - no gods, no laws
So I eat on and I sleep on
And I know we will meet on
Another day - on a quiet road, on - a safer shore
Serve no one, blame no one - awaiting the fall
This sign means you - this sign means all
Die by the ax - in a bed of ashes
Die by the ax - in the fields of snow
Die by the ax - the magic wand
Die by the ax - from dark to dawn
Die by the ax - a negation denied
Die by the ax - forever tied
Die by the ax - to a broken dream
Die by the ax - to memories unseen
Die by the ax - acid and sun
Die by the ax - sun and steel
Die by the ax - sign and seal
Die by the ax - no quarter given
Die by the ax - a negation denied
Die by the ax - forever tied
Die by the ax - to a broken dream
Die by the ax - to memories unseen
Die by the ax - in a bed of ashes
Die by the ax - in the fields of snow
Die by the ax - the magic wand
Die by the ax - from dark to dawn
Die by the ax - a negation denied
Die by the ax - forever tied
Die by the ax - to a broken dream
Die by the ax - to memories unseen
The lyrics of Rome's "Chanson De Gestes" express a sentiment of resistance and rebellion against established power structures. The refrain "serve no one, blame no one" emphasizes the importance of individual agency and rejecting both authority and the blame game. Instead, the focus is on personal empowerment through "refusal" and the recognition of one's own wounds. The lyrics also touch on themes of death and sacrifice, invoking images of being "restored to youth" through rebellion and, ultimately, dying by the ax.
The verses describe hiding oneself in mourning, suggesting a sense of isolation and detachment from society. The lines "each sign means grief, each sign means murder" imply that even simple gestures or symbols can have a deeper, darker meaning, and may be met with violence. The idea of a "quiet road" and a "safer shore" implies a longing for a peaceful, safe haven away from the turmoil and chaos of the world.
Overall, "Chanson De Gestes" conveys a spirit of defiance and resilience, advocating for individuality and standing up against oppressive systems. The use of vivid imagery and poetic language lends a dreamlike, almost surreal quality to the lyrics, evoking a sense of otherworldly hope in the face of strife.
