This Is How I Know
Ron Sexsmith Lyrics

From a garden to a sheet of ice
I feel you move in every sunrise
In the trembling of the leaves
This is how I know you're near me
From the ashes of a broken home
And through the music on the radio
You came to set me free
This is how I know you hear me
This is how I know our trials are not in vain
This is how I know we'll rise and love again
This is how I know
From a moment to a sea of days
From an ocean to a single wave
Out of nothing came the miracle
That loved us into being
This is how I know it will be
This is how I know
This is how I know
This is how I know it will be
The first verse of Ron Sexsmith's song "This Is How I Know" is a beautiful representation of the idea that love exists in everything around us. The first line, "From the darkness to a seed of light", suggests the idea that love has the power to bring light into even the darkest situations. The following lines, "From a garden to a sheet of ice" and "In the trembling of the leaves", convey the idea that love can be found all around us, even in the natural world, and that it has the power to move and affect us in profound ways.
The second verse speaks to the idea that love can bring us hope and healing in times of darkness and despair. The lines "From the ashes of a broken home" and "I sent a message to the great unknown" suggest that the singer is reaching out for help and guidance, and that love is the force that answers that call. The idea that love spoke to the singer "through the music on the radio" is particularly poignant, as it suggests that love can come to us in unexpected ways and through unexpected channels.
The chorus is the heart of the song, and it speaks to the idea that love has the power to transcend even the greatest trials and difficulties. The lines "This is how I know our trials are not in vain / This is how I know we'll rise and love again" convey the idea that, no matter what challenges we face, love will always be there to guide us through and give us hope for the future. The final lines, "This is how I know it will be / This is how I know / This is how I know", drive home the message of the song, suggesting that the power of love is an unshakable truth that the singer knows in their bones.
Overall, "This Is How I Know" is a gorgeous meditation on the power of love and its ability to bring light, hope, and healing into our lives. Through vivid imagery and poetic language, Ron Sexsmith has created a song that speaks to the heart and inspires us to believe in the power of love to transform our world.

Wow. He is so great. He's always reminded me a little of Ricky Nelson. He has that slightly sleepy quality to his voice. I love the guitar lick that begins this song.
