As The Crow Flies
Rory Gallagher Lyrics

As the crow flies, baby
Will I ain't so far from you
As the crow flies, baby
Will I ain't so far from you
But since I don't have wings
I can't get home as fast as I want to

As the crow flies, baby
Will I ain't so far from you
As the crow flies, baby
Will I ain't so far from you
But since I don't have wings
I can't get home as fast as I want to

In a dream last night
Where I heard you call my name
In a dream last night
Where I heard you call my name
Well, I took it as an omen
And I jumped on the very first weight train
Yeah, as the crow flies

Well, you don't know baby
How I miss you sweet caress
Well, you don't know baby
How I miss you sweet caress
When I'm in your lovin' arms
I swear I make my very best

As the crow flies, baby
That's how I'm on my way
As the crow flies, baby
I'm on my way
But don't stop runnin'
I can get home for the break of day
Get home for the break of day
Get home for the break of day
Get home for the break of day
Get home for the break of day

Get home for the break of day

Get home for the break of day
Get home for the break of day

Overall Meaning

Rory Gallagher's "As The Crow Flies" is a poignant love song about distance and longing. The singer is separated from his lover and pines for her every moment of the day. In the first verse, he acknowledges that they don't live so far apart if they measure it "as the crow flies," but unfortunately, he does not possess wings, and therefore, he can't get home as quickly as he wants to. He continues to lament his distance from his partner throughout the song, explaining that he takes any sign of their union as an implicit sign to make the trip.

In the second verse, he tells of a dream he had where he heard his significant other call out his name. He knows it is an omen that he needs to make the treacherous journey to be reunited with his love. He jumps on a weight train, knowing it is his only chance to get there. In the final verse, he proclaims how much he misses his partner's touch and how it makes him his best self. The chorus comes back around, and he repeats that he's on his way home, asking her to not stop running, for he will not be home until the break of day.

Overall, "As The Crow Flies" uses the imagery of a crow's ability to fly in a straight line to juxtapose the physical and emotional distance between two lovers. The song's protagonist powerfully communicates how his desire to be reunited with his partner fuels his every move.
