As well as singing, his performances include storytelling in the tradition of the travelling minstrel or troubadour and playing a wide range of instruments including guitar, harmonica, trombone and his own invention the 'stomping box'.

As a friend of Andy's, I've known from the start of this tournament, he was playing well, just knocking around in practice he was clearing up frame after frame. 7 straight centuries, the other day, much like he played when he reached the semi's in the Worlds. He's won all four matches in a deciding frame to get into the last 8! He's playing well, and if he can just keep positive, and play smart, he'll give Barry a good game.

I agree, he was wrong about the free ball, but I think McLeod said those words because he asked Gilbert to come over and look from his angle multiple times, but he ignored him. IMO, it does not appear that McLeod attempted to intimidate the referee or implied that Gilbert was a cheater, as stated by Gilbert after the match.

Rory was right to be discounted that his opponent did not come round the table to look more closely at the pairings of the green and black.

The angry "I expect better from you" moment from i think stems from when Gilbert told McLeod to stay still. I suspect McLeod felt a little insulted and maybe he felt Gilbert was blaming him for his miss along the bottom cushion.

The way I saw it was , if you wanted to pot the green say in the bottom left (very thin contact) I feel you would hit the black first , tricky to tell from the angles available but I thought it was a freebie

It's a tough one to call. From the Camera angle it looks as if Rory can hit both sides of the green so David would be right. But maybe from where Rory is standing he can't see both sides of it so then in that case Rory would be right. I'm not sure who is really correct here

The referee does a poor job of explaining his decision. When he puts the red ball in beside the green and black (about 9:30) he should explain to the players that if the red ball is closer to the white ball compared to the green then it is a free ball, but if the red ball is equidistant to or further away from the white ball compared to the green then it is not a free ball.

When your opponent commits a foul (Gilbert), you have two options: play yourself or ask your opponent to play. A Foul and a Miss gives you a third option: ask your opponent to play again from the original position.

I think Rory was having a bit of fun. Deliberately dragging the issue about a free ball. It was obvious even to an amateur that is not a free ball.

Difficult to tell if it was a free ball by the angles we can see on the video, I would have to say I agree with Rory, it looked a free ball from what I could see there.

I dont think I have ever seen Gilbert play so poorly, he was all over the place.

Anybody who uses the word "clearly" or "obviously" to refer to the free-ball incident has no idea what they are talking about. It is an extremely close call, and the video angle makes it virtually impossible to judge.

Obviously rory is right. The black ball is nearer to the green then shown in 10:27. The red ball placed by the ref shows that it is a free ball. The ref obviously doesn't know the rule even when it's hard to see.

Think it’s you ;-) looks like a slick playing surface to me. Rory tends to hit the ball harder than Gilbert so if you look at the weight Gilbert hits the ball you can see it’s pretty fast.

The point Rory is making is what whilst he can clearly see both sides of the green, he believes that cannot hit the left most side of the green ball before the cue ball makes contact with the back. The reason being that the widest part of the cue ball (or indeed any ball) is the in the middle, and by the time that part of the ball reaches the green the front of the cue ball will have hit the black.

I think it was more likely for the easy brown to set up better position to pot the green on the next shot. He wanted to get a break going so he could clear up and without the free ball, there's no way he'll pot the green on this break.

@Gandhi Mahatma I completely agree that it was 100% stupid, and McLeod should be utterly ashamed of his behavior, what a joke. David Gilbert is a top player, a consummate professional, and he and the referee were 100% correct. He was low on the brown, and so could probably go two cushions around to below the green and pot it in the right center pocket without a cannon, and without the rest, I think.
