Assault and Battery
Rose Tattoo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The judge said there'd be no bail
The charge was assault and battery
They dragged me off to jail
I did no crime, she was no friend of mine
Vengeance and justice went hand in hand
But there's a law for the rich and a law for the poor
They took no notice of her tears
But they were gettin' drunk on her fear
I arrived in time to spare her fate
That little girl would feel no shame
I did no crime, she was no friend of mine
Vengeance and justice went hand in hand
There's a law for the rich and a law for the poor
I'm just a workin' man, I'm just a workin' man
The charge was assault and battery
The judge said there'd be no bail
The charge was assault and battery
And they dragged me off to jail
They turned on me mad, crazy and mean
I stole 'em the cake, they were gonna cream
They leapt on me like a pack of dogs
Pullin' me down, they wanted me flogged
Punchin' and fightin' I got to my feet
Determined to leave their blood on the street
If I went down now they'd kick me to death
That sweet little girl would be left a wreck
I did no crime, she was no friend of mine
Vengeance and justice went hand in hand
There's a law for the rich and a law for the poor
I've been a workin' man, I've always been a workin' man
They were waitin' on me when I got out
And they stabbed me full of holes
It's now a case of kill or be killed
Unwritten jungle law
I did no crime, she was no friend of mine
Vengeance and justice went hand in hand
There's a law for the rich and a law for the poor
I'm just a simple workin' man, I'm just a simple workin' man
The charge was assault and battery
The judge said there'd be no bail
The charge was assault and battery
Three years in the stinkin' jail
The charge was assault and battery
The charge was assault and battery
The charge was assault and battery
The lyrics of Rose Tattoo's song "Assault and Battery" describe the story of a man who is charged with assault and battery, and dragged off to jail without bail. He pleads innocence, claiming that he had nothing to do with any crime, and that the woman involved was not his friend. He speaks of justice and vengeance going hand in hand, and how the law is different depending on one's social class. He also describes how he saved a little girl from shame, and how the people who turned on him later stabbed him full of holes, marking a shift to "unwritten jungle law." The song paints a bleak picture of the justice system, and of people's inherent violence when pushed to the limit.
The lyrics of "Assault and Battery" encapsulate the punk spirit of Rose Tattoo, and its themes of working-class struggle, violence, and social inequality. The song's title comes from the criminal law offense of assault and battery, which refers to the act of intentionally causing bodily harm to another person. The lyrics challenge the notion of objective justice, and instead suggest that justice is subjective, and depends on one's status and power. The song's references to violence, revenge, and survival also reflect the band's rough and tough image, and its fans' affinity for anti-social behavior.

When people like me boast about our age on You Tube comments it is to put things in perspective for the much younger people.
I was 20 in 1981 when Assault & Battery was unleashed onto an unsuspecting public.
Rose Tattoo were banned from the ABC's Countdown music program in 1978 after Angry Anderson and guitarist Michael Cocks tongue-kissed each other mid-performance.
I thought they were exchanging chewing gum.
The original Band members looked like hardcore bikers, real hard living Rockers.
Looks are deceptive because they were fairly decent humans.
Angry Anderson is one of the nicest blokes you could meet.
I lost interest and respect for the Band after the original members passed away and Angry was the only remaining original.
You won't hear much better rhythm Guitar work than on this original Rose Tattoo song.
I hope Angry doesn't mind me saying that for a Hard Rock Band, The Rosie Tatts had a 'commercial sound'
What I mean by that is they had a sound that was accessible to the mainstream public.
They had riffs and hooks and melodies that you can sing a long to and with.
We can't be Beaten because Rock n Roll is King.

Yeah i love it aswell Keepitrunning but i,ll tell you where they REALLY got their inspiration from, early Cliff Richard and the Shadows, yeah, they were playing hard rock before any of these boys were, you can forget fucking AC/DC or Soft Led Zepplin, Cliff and the boys tore the fucking roof off way back in 59-62 era every time they launched into their number 1 single " (I was charged with) Double Rape and Sodomy of a minor under the age of three, so thats Assault and Buggery"
