1. Italo disco act from mid-80s by Ubaldo Zambelli
2. Reaching all the way back to Bob Dylan and the Band's pioneering blend of mythic Americana and shaggy rock & roll, alongside more recent points of comparison like Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, and My Morning Jacket, Roy (a band, not a dude) blend spiky post-Pavement indie rock with folk and country influences for a sound that's connected to the musical past but not beholden to it. For over a decade, singer and guitarist Brian Cook and drummer Dave Verellen were the mainstays of Botch, a Seattle post-hardcore act specializing in heavy riffs and showy time-signature shifts. Roy began as a side project in 2002, bringing Cook and Verellen together with singer and guitarist Ben Verellen and bassist Mike Cooper. Naming themselves after the small rural town near Tacoma, Roy debuted with 2003's Tacomatose EP, followed by 2004's Big City Sin and Small Town Redemption. Though Roy toured extensively behind their two records, the band went on a temporary hiatus while Cook and Ben Verellen turned their focus to another side project, the more Botch-like heavy math rockers These Arms Are Snakes. Roy reconvened in 2005 to write and record their second full-length album, Killed John Train, which was released by Lujo Records in the spring of 2006.

Yo no sé lo que es parar
Me levanto las mañanas
Pensando en que pasara
Me coloco mi camiseta
Corro y tomo esa libreta
Me enseñaste a no estar triste
Hey mírame, te voy a poner orgullosa
Enserio vamos lejos y me acompañarán
Hey yo, vuela conmigo
Hey yo, en mí confío
Hey yo, vuela conmigo
Y perdón si me he puesto sentimental
Hey yo, vuela conmigo
Hey yo, en mí confío
Hey yo, vuela conmigo
Hey yo, en mí confío
A paso firme
Distante
Vistiendo no elegante
El pelo colorado
Pero queriendo bastante
Cantarte
Salir para buscarte
A ti, mi obra de arte
Entendernos bastante
Amarte
Recorrer los planetas
Diciéndonos la neta
Guarda todas mis letras
Trasciende a las estrellas
Volando con ellas
Llenando las libretas
Siempre dejando huella
Con ella, en la arena
The lyrics to Roy's song Hey Lawdy Mama describe the rapper's determination to pursue his dreams and make his mother proud. He reminisces on conversations with his mother, who encouraged him to push himself and believe in his abilities. He talks about his daily routine, getting dressed and grabbing his notebook to jot down his thoughts and ideas. He also acknowledges the doubts he may face and the struggles he's had to overcome but assures that he trusts in the universe's plan for him. He speaks to his mother and father, thanking them for their support, and promises to make them proud by achieving success.
The song is a powerful message about persevering in the face of adversity and holding dear the love of family. Roy's lyrics highlight his commitment to making something of himself despite his age, having just turned 21. He asserts that hard work coupled with faith and confidence can lead to achieving one's aspirations. The inclusion of Spanish phrases throughout the song touches on Roy's identity as a bilingual artist and his desire to bridge cultural gaps through his music. Overall, the song is a testament to Roy's ambition and his unwavering commitment to his craft.

Y yo le dije a mi mamá
I once told my mother,
Yo no sé lo que es parar
I don't know how to stop,
Me levanto las mañanas
I wake up in the morning,
Pensando en que pasara
Thinking about what will happen,
Me coloco mi camiseta
I put on my shirt,
Corro y tomo esa libreta
I run and grab that notebook,
Me escribo la noche anterior
I write before the night,
Solo otra vez en mi habitación
Just alone again in my room,
Hey mami, recuerdo que dijiste
Hey mom, I remember you said,
You insisted that I would go far,
Tú creíste, Sabes lo aprendiste
You believed, you know what you learned,
Me enseñaste a no estar triste
You taught me not to be sad,
Hey mírame, te voy a poner orgullosa
Hey look at me, I'm going to make you proud,
Entre prosas, versos, te regalo rosas
Between prose and verse, I give you roses,
Entre sueños, una casa en santa rosa
Amidst dreams, a house in Santa Rosa,
Or in Venice, but let me do my things,
21 y talvez piensas que estoy loco
21 and maybe you think I'm crazy,
Estoy Safao pero prendido del foco
I'm loose, but focused,
Poco perdido, pero confío en el destino
A little lost, but I trust in fate,
Made for greatness because it's in my blood,
Para mis hermanos, pa' mi madre y mi dad
For my siblings, for my mother and my dad,
For all the love you give me,
Para todos aquellos que siempre están
For all those who are always there,
Enserio vamos lejos y me acompañarán
Seriously, we're going far and they'll accompany me,
Hey yo, vuela conmigo
Hey, fly with me,
Hey yo, en mí confío
Hey, I trust in myself,
I trust in myself, I walk along the path,
Pateando rocas y viviendo lo que digo
Kicking rocks and living what I say,
Charlando y cheves, y aún mejor si es contigo
Chatting and drinking beers, and even better if it's with you,
If I dream it, I do it and I achieve it,
And if I fall and get up for those that I have tattooed,
For the things we dream, a walk in Malibu,
To wander this planet with my parents giving the tour,
And maybe there's not enough money yet, but come,
Everything comes true if you work hard for what you want,
Y perdón si me he puesto sentimental
And sorry if I've become sentimental,
It's 3 am and I have to wake up,
From this dream that maybe will end,
But why talk about all that if we're going to achieve it,
Siempre ando 24/7 alado de la luna
I'm always 24/7 next to the moon,
Como mi familia no hay ninguna
There's no family like mine,
A paso firme
With a steady step,
Distante
Distant,
Vistiendo no elegante
Not dressing elegantly,
El pelo colorado
Hair colored,
Pero queriendo bastante
But wanting a lot,
Cantarte
Singing to you,
Salir para buscarte
Going out to find you,
A ti, mi obra de arte
To you, my work of art,
Entendernos bastante
Understanding each other pretty well,
Amarte
Loving you,
Recorrer los planetas
Traveling through the planets,
Diciéndonos la neta
Telling each other the truth,
Guarda todas mis letras
Keep all my lyrics,
Trasciende a las estrellas
Transcending the stars,
Volando con ellas
Flying with them,
Llenando las libretas
Filling up the notebooks,
Siempre dejando huella
Always leaving my mark,
Con ella, en la arena
With her, on the sand.

My late father was a 19-year-old Montford Point Marine fighting the Japanese in the jungles of Okinawa and Saipan for this racist country when this soundie was released. He suffered from what is now called PTSD from his wartime experiences. I wonder if he ever saw this soundie?
