2. Reaching all the way back to Bob Dylan and the Band's pioneering blend of mythic Americana and shaggy rock & roll, alongside more recent points of comparison like Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, and My Morning Jacket, Roy (a band, not a dude) blend spiky post-Pavement indie rock with folk and country influences for a sound that's connected to the musical past but not beholden to it. For over a decade, singer and guitarist Brian Cook and drummer Dave Verellen were the mainstays of Botch, a Seattle post-hardcore act specializing in heavy riffs and showy time-signature shifts. Roy began as a side project in 2002, bringing Cook and Verellen together with singer and guitarist Ben Verellen and bassist Mike Cooper. Naming themselves after the small rural town near Tacoma, Roy debuted with 2003's Tacomatose EP, followed by 2004's Big City Sin and Small Town Redemption. Though Roy toured extensively behind their two records, the band went on a temporary hiatus while Cook and Ben Verellen turned their focus to another side project, the more Botch-like heavy math rockers These Arms Are Snakes. Roy reconvened in 2005 to write and record their second full-length album, Killed John Train, which was released by Lujo Records in the spring of 2006.

from my eyes
will you take out the nail
that holds the sign
the sign in my mind
you must know, you must know the reason why
can you try to give a form new meaning like breathing in an open void, that's wholeness surrounding your soul
eye
The opening lines of the lyrics in Roy's song "Where the Mind Meets the Eye" express a longing for clarity and understanding. The reference to lifting the veil from the eyes suggests a desire to see things as they truly are, to uncover hidden truths. Similarly, the mention of removing the nail that holds the sign signifies a need to let go of preconceived notions or beliefs that may be clouding one's perception. The "sign in my mind" could represent a symbolic barrier or limitation that prevents a deeper understanding of oneself or the world.
The next stanza delves into the idea of giving form new meaning. The comparison to breathing in an open void implies embracing an expansive mindset, free from limitations. This openness represents the concept of wholeness, wherein one's soul is surrounded and influenced by an all-encompassing sense of unity with the world. By suggesting that this wholeness occurs where the mind meets the eye, the lyrics imply that true understanding and perception can be achieved when the inner world of thoughts and the external world of appearances align.
In essence, these lyrics invite the listener to explore the relationship between the mind and the eye, expressing a curiosity about the intersection of inner perception and external observation. The song suggests that in this convergence lies the key to comprehending the complexities of existence and finding a sense of unity and purpose. By seeking to lift the veil, remove limiting beliefs, and embrace a broader understanding, the lyrics encourage the listener to embark on a journey of self-discovery and open-mindedness, ultimately leading to an integrated perception of the self and the surrounding world.
