After You've Gone
Roy Eldridge and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now won't you listen honey, while I say,
How could you tell me that you're goin' away?
Don't say that we must part,
Don't break your baby's heart

You know I've loved you for these many years,
Loved you night and day,
Oh! honey baby, can't you see my tears?
Listen while I say

After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad
You'll miss the dearest pal you've ever had

There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
Someday, when you grow lonely
Your heart will break like mine and you'll want me only
After you've gone, after you've gone away

After you've gone and left me cryin'
After you've gone there's no denyin'
You're gonna feel blue, and you're gonna feel sad
You're gonna feel bad
And you'll miss, and you'll miss,
And you'll miss the bestest pal you ever had

There'll come a time, now don't forget it
There'll come a time when you'll regret it
But baby, think what you're doin'
I'm gonna haunt you so, I'm gonna taunt you so

It's gonna drive you to ruin
After you've gone, after you've gone away.

Overall Meaning

The song "After You've Gone" by the Roy Eldridge Orchestra featuring Gladys Palmer is about the pain of a breakup and the regret that the person who left will feel. The lyrics start with the singer pleading with their lover not to leave them, begging them not to break their heart. The singer then expresses their love for their partner and the pain they feel now that they are gone, asking them to listen while they speak.

The chorus of the song is a warning to the person who has left, saying that they will feel the same pain and sadness as the singer once they realize what they have lost. The singer predicts that the person who has left will eventually regret their decision and will feel lonely without them, realizing that they were the best friend they ever had.

Overall, the song is an emotional ballad that expresses the feelings of heartbreak and regret that come with a breakup. The lyrics reveal the pain that the singer is feeling, but also suggest that the person responsible for causing that pain will eventually feel it themselves.

Roy is my favorite trumpet player. His Verve Records recording with Art Tatum (~1956) is one of the finest jazz albums ever made. It's available on CD. If that doesn't get your feet tapping, check yourself for a pulse.

j Kara

His technique is out of reach!

ROY COULD SWING LIKE NO ONE COULD! MADE A LOT OF GREAT RECORDS FOR KRUPA AND ARTIE SHAW

All this AMAZINGNESS and ROY had false teeth. Most people cant play trumpet at 1% of this with a full set of real teeth.

Alvaro !

yeah man, when the trumpet player is good, anything can't stop him. like chet baker don't had all teeth in the mouth, but played trumpet like nobody else

Anyone know which/where is the 1937 version? It was a B-side to Where The Lazy River Goes By

VinniePaah

Swing at Bebop speed which by the way was coming shortly after the recording date so there is some logic in that.
