Braff was a wonderfully characterful and melodic player with an immediately identifiable sound and unique tone on the cornet, an uncommon instrument in post-war jazz. He style was fundamentally based on that of earlier players including Louis Armstrong, Bobby Hackett and Bunny Berigan but he transcended these influences to always sounds fresh, sparky and somehow modern.
He was born in Boston and began playing in local clubs in the 1940s. In 1949, he was hired to play with the Edmond Hall Orchestra. He relocated to New York in 1953 where he was much in demand for band dates and recordings.
He died February 10, 2003, in Chatham, Massachusetts.
"Sure, they’ve made statements about my supposedly combining a modern approach with a feeling for traditional forms. Well, people say all sorts of things, because they want to categorise and label. I’ve only ever had two labels. Either it’s good or it stinks." - Ruby Braff speaking in 1968

Till the tune ends,
We're dancing in the dark and it soon ends,
We're waltzing in the wonder of why we're here,
Time hurries by, we're here and gone;
Looking for the light of a new love,
To brighten up the night, I have you love,
Dancing in the dark.
The song "Romance In The Dark" by Ruby Braff is a beautiful and wistful tune about love and the fleeting nature of time. The song seems to be a reflection on the temporary nature of life and love, and how we should cherish and appreciate the special moments we have with our loved ones. The first two lines of the song, "Dancing in the dark, till the tune ends," speak to the idea that sometimes we have to dance in the dark - to take risks and leap into the unknown - even when we're not sure what will happen next.
The next couplet, "We're waltzing in the wonder of why we're here, time hurries by, we're here and gone," conveys a sense of wonder and amazement at the strange and unpredictable nature of life. Even as we dance and enjoy the moment, time is constantly moving forward, and we know that we can't hold onto these joyous moments forever. In the final lines of the song, the focus shifts to the present moment, and the singer reflects on the love that is currently in their life. "Looking for the light of a new love, to brighten up the night, I have you love, and we can face the music together, dancing in the dark." Here, the singer is grateful for the love they have, and sees the value in facing the challenges of life together.
