Although their earlier releases contained Satanic themes and imagery, from the third album on, the band's primary subject matter centered around pirates, sailing and other historical events. In 1987, the band released the album Under Jolly Roger, which was a switch to pirate-based and historical themes, creating and influencing the later named pirate metal subgenre of heavy metal in the 2000s in the process. While the historical lyrics were very superficial at first, the lyrics for later albums were intensively researched, by frontman Rolf Kasparek in particular.
After this album, from 1988 to 1992 (for the albums Port Royal, Death or Glory, Blazon Stone and Pile of Skulls), Running Wild mainly wrote historically based lyrics. In addition to lyrics about pirates, the band also addressed subjects like the Wars of the Roses, the Battle of Waterloo, or the colonization of the New World by the Conquistadors.
In April 2009, Kasparek announced that Running Wild had split up. Their intended last show was at Wacken Open Air in July that year. It was recorded for CD and DVD release and appeared as The Final Jolly Roger in 2011. The split would prove temporary as they reunited in 2012. Running Wild played live for the Wacken Open Air festival in 2015. As of 2021, the band have released 17 studio albums, with their most recent being Blood on Blood.

Running Wild Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A bomb exploded, I'm getting hun
The body's raging, well, I see red
No more caging, 'til the hunger's fed
-Words of thunder, storm breaks loose
Now, going under, no way to move
I'm a flash of lighting, cracking to the ground
T.N.T. is the deepest part of me
Dynamite, the stuff to get it right
Detonator
I smash your mirror, saw the truth behind
Gone to zero, I'm not blind
Toxic terror, that's what you are
Insulting error has gone to far
[Pre & Chorus...]
Getting loaded, the heat is on
A bomb exploded, I'm getting hun
The body's raging, well, I see red
No more caging, 'til the hunger's fed
[Pre & Chorus...]
The lyrics to Running Wild's song Detonator describe the overwhelming feeling of explosive energy and the need for release. The song starts with the singer acknowledging that they are getting intoxicated and feeling the heat building up inside of them, like a bomb waiting to go off. The tension in their body is reaching a point of no return, and they feel like they are ready to break free from their cage. As the storm breaks loose, the singer is unable to resist the energy building up inside them, and they become like a flash of lightning, cracking the ground beneath them.
The chorus of the song speaks to the singer's explosive nature and how it is an integral part of who they are. They reference TNT as being the deepest part of themselves, explosive and powerful, like dynamite. They are the Detonator, the catalyst that sets off the explosion. In the second verse, the singer meets someone who they see through like a smashed mirror, seeing the truth behind the facade. They realize that this person is toxic and insulting, causing them to lose their patience and lash out.
Overall, the lyrics describe the singer's inner turmoil and how it feels to be on the brink of an explosion. They are full of explosive power that is waiting to be released, and once they let go of their inhibitions, they feel a sense of release and freedom.
