The Ring of Fire
Rupert Gregson-Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is a burning thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
Lord I fell into a ring of fire

[Chorus:]
I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down and the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire the ring of fire

[Chorus:]

Now the taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Oh but the fire went wild

[Chorus: Repeat 2X]

I fell into a burning ring of fire...
And it burns burns burns the ring of fire the ring of fire

Overall Meaning

Rupert Gregson-Williams's "The Ring of Fire" is a classic ballad about the overpowering nature of love. The opening line, "Love is a burning thing," sets the stage for the rest of the song, describing a passionate relationship that is both intense and dangerous. The metaphor of the "ring of fire" is an apt one, as love can indeed be a blaze that engulfs those caught in its grasp.

The first verse further establishes the power of desire, using the imagery of a "fiery ring" to capture the all-encompassing nature of love. The next line, "Bound by wild desire," acknowledges the often uncontrollable nature of this emotion. The singer has fallen into this "ring of fire," unable to resist its lure.

The chorus repeats the phrase "I fell into a burning ring of fire" several times, emphasizing the singer's deep entanglement with this powerful force. The use of "down, down, down" reinforces the idea that love can be a free-fall, taking us to unexpected and sometimes dangerous places. The final line of the chorus, "And it burns, burns, burns," underscores the fiery, inescapable nature of the singer's situation.

The second verse suggests that the singer's relationship may have started off sweetly enough, with the "taste of love" being "sweet" when two hearts meet. However, the closing lines of the verse ("Oh but the fire went wild") indicate that things have spiraled out of control, and the singer is now helplessly caught up in the passionate flames.

Overall, "The Ring of Fire" is a vivid depiction of the all-consuming nature of love, with its highs and lows, joys and dangers.

Orm: You have our mother's trident. Powerful, but flawed, like her. I wield my father's, and it has never known defeat!!

Man this fight scene sequences in the ring of fire is so bad ass. The way they both evade each other attack by an inch, the way Orm kick and throw Arthur with his feet, Arthur kicking Orm into the lava, Orm throw back lava with his trident, Arthur break the lava in half, then the clash of the trident that result in wave of water :)
