The Merry Go Round Broke Down
Russ Morgan & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The merry-go-round broke down
As we went 'round and 'round
Each time t'would miss, we'd steal a kiss
And the merry-go-round went-

The merry-go-round broke down
And made the darnedest sound
The lights went low, we both said, "Oh"
And the merry-go-round went-

Oh, what fun, a wonderful time
Finding love for only a dime

The merry-go-round broke down
But you don't see me frown
Things turned out fine and now she's mine
'Cause the the merry-go-round went-
The merry-go-round broke down

Woo-woo, woo-woo
Woo, woo, woo-woo

Woo-woo, woo-woo
Woo, woo, woo-woo

Woo-woo, woo-woo
Woo, woo, woo-woo

Overall Meaning

The song "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" by Russ Morgan & His Orchestra is a cheerful tune that tells the story of two young lovers who ride a merry-go-round, steal kisses and eventually fall in love. However, the machinery eventually breaks, creating a dissonant sound. Despite this, the couple expresses joy and contentment, stating that they found love for only a dime. The song plays on the idea of the ups and downs of life and love, comparing them to the broken merry-go-round.

The repeated use of the phrase "the merry-go-round broke down" represents the instability of life and relationships. The lyrics convey that even when things don't go as planned or when plans break down, love and happiness can still lead to a positive outcome. The use of the merry-go-round is symbolic of life's cycles, which can be unpredictable and uncontrollable, but the lovers remain optimistic and joyful throughout their experience.

Overall, the song's message is that love is worth the risk of getting caught up in life's unpredictable twists and turns. It encourages listeners to find joy in the journey, even when things go wrong.

Hearing about someone kissing on a theme park ride and finding love on it, it makes me sad and wistful, reminding me of having loved and lost...

Thank you for this. I've been wanting to hear the actual song (before Looney Tunes, Daffy, Roger Rabbit) for... decades. Now, I have. This is my favorite out of the three you posted. Thanks, again!
edit: aaaaaaand... I can't spell "looney"

This is good I guess. I don't remember which version was best. This song is kind of a taboo. It was made unavailable on youtube because of copyright conflicts probably. I had a very hard time finding a good version last time I looked.
