The band plays epic, sprawling music which runs the gamut of heavy discordant metal to soft delicate passages. They are also known for their energetic live shows, having toured with Isis, Tool, Red Sparowes, Pelican, Minus the Bear, Daughters, amongst various others. They have also taken part in the 2006, 2007 & 2008 SXSW festivals.
Formed in late 2004 by guitarist Mike Sullivan and bassist Colin DeKuiper (both formerly of another instrumental band Dakota/Dakota), they quickly recruited Dave Turncrantz, formerly of St. Louis band Riddle of Steel. In 2007 DeKuiper departed the band and Brian Cook (These Arms Are Snakes and Botch) took on the role of bass player for the writing and recording of their newest album, entitled Station, recorded in Seattle with Producer Matt Bayles.
Station was released on May the 6th, 2008 on Suicide Squeeze Records.
On October 20th, 2009, the band released their third album entitled Geneva The album featured the same lineup as Station, with Brian Cook taking a much larger role in the writing and creation of the album. Brian Cook described the band's take on the new album being "less concerned with making sure we could replicate the material live as we were with making a compelling album."
In 2011, Russian Circles signed to Sargent House who had previously only exclusively released the band's albums on limited edition vinyl. Their fourth studio album Empros was released on October 25, 2011. A supporting tour with Deafheaven followed the release. In May, 2013 the group began recording their fifth studio album, produced by Brandon Curtis. Memorial was released at the end of October 2013 and featured a guest-vocal by Chelsea Wolfe. Together they embarked on a co-headlining UK/European tour in the fall.

Russian Circles and Red Sparrows would always be in my top list of music makers of all time. They're just brilliant.
It is quite weird what sort of sensations you get when listening to those two bands. I still remember back in 2013 when i first stumbled on them while i was sitting in the computer lab studying for some random course during my bachelor studies back in Cyprus.
I felt that this music really allows you to be present with yourself, listening to the sounds of the instruments, some weird ass pure connection with oneself, it is deep (at least when we want to take it there).
Now 10 years later, it is still going strong - it reminds me of the old days and how far we've come when we look back and reflect.
I also love to entertain the thought that the band members of (Russian Circles and Red Sparrows) are just talented humans who just created those sounds together in the studio, experimenting, having fun, solving challenges, and having a beer just like us humans. There is so much that we can appreciate from every person we see around in our lives (of course some are pure shit too, not the soul inside them, but the state they are in reflect to their outer actions and stuff). What i am trying to say is that such music is a blessing, like many other things in life, enjoy it and be present with it whenever you can.
For me among many other songs of Russian circles my favs are: Youngblood, Verses, Vorel ,Bloom, Sinaia, 1777, and Memorial are definitely a masterpiece.

I always come back to the albums Station and Enter. I go lengthy periods of times, years, without hearing them. Then my brain all of a sudden says, "Russian Circles", and I gorge myself upon these wonderful albums. Truly legendary and timeless. Been listening to Russian Circles since the mid 2000's. Goddamn I'm old.

A great deal easier to listen to their heavier stuff later into their albums. Geneva was a wild album, definately used that to oblivion.

This is one of the most peaceful and powerful pieces I have ever heard. Thank you so much for this.
