What sweeter music
Rutter Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Than a carol for to sing
The birth of this our Heavenly King?
Awake the voice, awake the string
Dark and dull night, fly hence away
And give the honor to this day
That sees December turned to May
Why does the chilling winter's mourn
Smile, like a field beset with corn?
Or smell like a meadow newly-shorn
Thus, on the sudden? Come and see
The 'cause, why things thus fragrant be
It is He is born, whose quickening birth
Gives life and luster, public mirth
To Heaven, and the under-Earth
We see him come, and know him ours
Who with his sunshine and his showers
Turns all the patient ground to flowers
Turns all the patient ground to flowers
The darling of the world is come
And fit it is, we find a room
To welcome him, to welcome him
The nobler part of all the house here is the heart
Which we will give him, and bequeath
This holy and this ivy wreath
To do him honour, who's our King
And Lord of all this revelling
What sweeter music can we bring
Than a carol for to sing
The birth of this our Heavenly King?
Of this our Heavenly King
The lyrics to Rutter's song "What sweeter music" celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Heavenly King. The first verse reflects on the joy and sweetness of the music brought forth in the form of a Christmas carol to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It emphasizes the importance of awakening and using our voices and instruments to praise and honor Him.
In the second verse, the lyrics describe the transformation that occurs on the day of Jesus' birth. The dull and dark night is replaced with brightness, warmth, and the honor of the day. December, typically associated with winter, is metaphorically turned into May, symbolizing new life and vitality. This transformation is attributed to the presence of the newborn Jesus, who brings light and joy to both Heaven and Earth.
The third verse explores the paradoxical beauty and pleasantness of the winter season. The chilling winter, associated with mourning and bareness, appears to smile and smell like a field full of corn or a freshly-shorn meadow. The lyrics suggest that this sudden change in fragrance and appearance is due to the birth of Jesus. His arrival brings life, vitality, and merriment to both the heavenly and earthly realms.
The final verse reflects the recognition and acknowledgment of Jesus as the darling of the world. The lyrics express the need to find room in our hearts to welcome Him. The heart is recognized as the noblest part of ourselves, and it is in this part that Jesus is given honor and worship. The lyrics conclude by affirming Jesus as the King and the Lord of all the celebrations and revelries associated with His birth.
Overall, these lyrics convey the profound joy and reverence surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ, highlighting His transformative power, His role as the bringer of light and life, and the need to welcome His presence in our lives with open hearts.

What sweeter music can we bring
What more beautiful and joyful music can we offer
Than a carol for to sing
Than a song of praise and celebration
The birth of this our Heavenly King?
To commemorate the arrival of our divine ruler
Awake the voice, awake the string
Let our voices and instruments resound with joyful melody
Dark and dull night, fly hence away
The gloomy and lifeless darkness must depart
And give the honor to this day
And bestow glory upon this special day
That sees December turned to May
That witnesses the transformation of winter into spring
Why does the chilling winter's mourn
Why does the cold winter lament
Smile, like a field beset with corn?
Yet appear cheerful, like a field filled with ripe grain?
Or smell like a meadow newly-shorn
Or exude the fragrance of a freshly mowed meadow
Thus, on the sudden? Come and see
Suddenly, without explanation? Come and witness
The 'cause, why things thus fragrant be
The reason behind this delightful aroma
It is He is born, whose quickening birth
It is the birth of the One who brings life and vitality
Gives life and luster, public mirth

Who, with his warmth and blessings
Turns all the patient ground to flowers
Transforms the waiting earth into a colorful garden
The darling of the world is come
The beloved one of the world has arrived
And fit it is, we find a room
And it is appropriate that we make space
To welcome him, to welcome him
To greet and receive him
The nobler part of all the house here is the heart
The most important part of our being is our heart and soul
Which we will give him, and bequeath
Which we will offer and pass down
This holy and this ivy wreath
This sacred symbol of everlasting life and growth
To do him honour, who's our King
To show respect to the one who is our ruler
And Lord of all this revelling

I am a Jewish cantor, and this exquisite music is holy, sacred, and stunning in its beauty. When I first heard it long ago on my car radio, I pulled over, and just listened, weeping. Hate cannot prevail in the face of beauty such as this.

What a wonderful tribute to the power of music to move us.

I sang in 200 voice choir and we sang a lot of his music. It was the most amazing experience to be in middle of all those voices singing such blessed music.

This is one of the most beautiful choral pieces of all time. The last time I performed it with a wonderful choir, I cried.

This is music that is so intensely beautiful that it almost physically hurts to listen to it. I don't know what to do with myself when I listen to this over and over and over.
