Adams dropped out of high school at age 16 to work in a shoe shop and make music. He formed a band named Whiskeytown in 1994; they disbanded in 1999 having released two full albums, Faithless Street and Strangers Almanac. Adams went on to put out his first solo record, Heartbreaker, in 2000. After a long delay, in 2001 Whiskeytown's third album Pneumonia was finally issued.
In 2002, Ryan contributed backing vocals on Butterfly in Reverse, from the Counting Crows album, Hard Candy; after Adam Duritz (Counting Crows lead singer) appeared on the album Gold.
Ryan is highly prolific, and in 2005 released one double album and two regular albums: Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights and 29, respectively. His album, 29, was produced by friend Ethan Johns (who also produced his first two albums, Heartbreaker and Gold). In between those two releases and his 2005 triple-header, Ryan released Demolition (a collection of out-takes), Love Is Hell and Rock N Roll. Unreleased studio albums include 48 Hours, Exile On Franklin Street and Suicide Handbook.
In addition, Adams worked with Jesse Malin to form the punk-rock group The Finger (under the pseudonyms, "Warren Peace" and "Irving Plaza" respectively), who released two E.P.s which were collected together to form We Are Fuck You, released on One Little Indian Records in 2003.
In 2006 Ryan went on a minor UK-tour and a minor US-tour along the west-coast and has streamed 11+ mini albums on his website, under numerous jokey pseudonyms (DJ Reggie, Werewolph, The Shit, Rhoda Ro, Ghetto Birds).
The following solo record, entitled Easy Tiger, was released on June 26, 2007. The newest and last record with his backing band The Cardinals, Cardinology, was released in October 2008 and followed by extensive touring through the UK, US and Australia.
In January 2009 he announced that he would be going on an indefinite hiatus from music. The Kindness Songfacts reports that the major reason for Adams’ temporary retirement was his struggles with Ménière’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear that wrecks havoc on hearing and balance. Adams resumed performing in October 2010, and released his thirteenth studio album, Ashes & Fire, on October 11, 2011. His now ex-wife, pop singer and actress Mandy Moore, contributed some backing vocals.
Rescue Blues
Ryan Adams Lyrics

And everybody wants you to be high
They throw you down a rope when you're in
Trouble, baby
Screamin', "save me"
Then they charge you with the rescue blues
Ah, the rescue blues, oh ah ah
They know that you need the pain so much
They throw you up a rope when you're too high
To cruise, baby
Lord, you lose lady
Then they charge you with the rescue blues
Ah, the rescue blues, oh ah ah
And everybody wants to see you fall
That's why they always love to get you high
And everybody knows you need the pain so much, lady
Well, keep in touch, baby
Just don't charge me with the rescue blues
Oh ah, rescue blues, oh ah ah
The lyrics to Ryan Adams's song The Rescue Blues, at first glance, seem to be about addiction and the inevitable cycle of needing help and then falling back into old habits. The opening lines of the song, "And everybody wants you to be special, and everybody wants you to be high," alludes to the idea that society has constructed a notion that one needs to be extraordinary or constantly under the influence to feel valued. It continues to suggest the people around the singer throw them a rope when they're in trouble, but this metaphor is misleading, as the singer is 'charged with the rescue blues' - they are left dealing with their own problems, with nobody else to pull them through.
The second verse is somewhat similar, with the lyrics, "And everybody wants to see you suffer, they know that you need the pain so much." This could be alluding to a sort of schadenfreude, where people derive pleasure from watching others suffer. The refrain "rescue blues" seems to suggest that people will offer help, but it isn't genuine or is only superficial. The chorus is a warning to the singer, a person in a vulnerable state, not to rely on others for rescue from their addiction.
Overall, The Rescue Blues speaks to the idea that society constructs unrealistic and often damaging ideas of what it means to be happy, special or valuable. People offer help when it is convenient, but when it comes time to actually help, they abandon the vulnerable to their own struggles. The song is a warning not to succumb to the temptation of seeking rescue from others, but to find a path to wellness that is personal and genuine.

My favorite scene was watching the slow mo of the Admiral walking the deck of his CVN while she made a slow port turn, waving to his crew. Taking his reputation from the hands of the bureaucrats knowing he did the right thing.

what an incredible song! I had the absolute joy of meeting a bunch of the crew from this amphibious assault ship shortly after they rescued this pilot depicted in the film. At the time, the ship was moored in Odesa harbor in Ukraine on the Black Sea, and some of the crew were on shore leave. Along with my colleague and three female students we were perhaps 200 ft away, walking towards an outdoor cafe when five guys stood up and started screaming "Americans, Americans," and we started "the US Navy." Neither we nor they expected to meet fellow countrymen in Odesa and we all hugged each other as if we were best friends, which at that time we most certainly were. We spent several hours telling each other how we ended up in Odesa, which is how we learned about the details of the rescue. The sailors very much enjoyed the company of the lovely coeds. I'm not all that patriotic but I was never more proud of the US military. The next day we got a tour of ship and got to meet the captain and his staff. At the time, Americans in that part of the world were very, very uncommon, and for me it was a part of that memorable trip that I'll shall never forget.
