What’s hit me the most about this scene is that you realize both of them would’ve never became who they were in this scene without each other. It was Mia who reminded Seb of his initial yet ultimate goal, to open a jazz club, while he was getting caught up in his new band. It was Seb who drove all the way to Nevada to take Mia to her audition, opening the gates to her future career. None of them would’ve accomplished their goals without each other, and yet, here they sit, in the same room, living the dreams they dreamed together, as strangers.

For me, the ending is so powerful because, he pushed her to fulfill her dreams, and so did she. Neither one of them held the other back. They both wanted the absolute best for each other no matter the cost to their personal happiness. When they were speaking by the Observatory in the daylight, he knew when she got the part she would be traveling and successful and he didn't want to hold her back. If Seb had given up the band and traveled with Mia as she began her fame, he would never have been able to open Seb's from his own hard work. If Mia gave up on her dreams (which Seb wouldn't have let her do), she would never have fulfilled her own dream either which would have led to unhappiness.
The ending is so powerful because Mia and Seb in the crowd = Mia with her success but Seb without his dream of Jazz club. And Mia with her husband = Seb with his dream of a club. Yes, you could argue that they didn't get their love in the end with each other, but if either sacrificed their goals, then their partnership long term probably wouldn't have worked considering how ambitious both of them were.
An absolutely beautiful timeless movie that I will never grow bored of. The first time I saw it was in a theatre in Edinburgh and I cried at how beautiful this film is. Absolute classic.

I disagree with the end of your comment. The end scene literally shows an alternate timeline where they would have been together and absolutely happy.

And in this alternate timeline, they did get to achieve their dream in their own way. They were both less successful and didn’t get exactly what they dreamed of, but they were so happy with each other it didn’t even matter.

Honestly, that’s generally how it works in real life anyways. Very rarely do you get exactly what you wanted. But you try your best to make it work and sometimes, you are even happier with this new dream than you ever could have been with the old one

The whole point of the ending is that it was showing that there were two happy endings in store for them. They chose the ending where they were much more successful but couldn’t be together. That’s just how it is

@Ethan Harmer Exactly. I think a lot of people are weighing the career dreams too much. We all have our career dream, but achieving that dream is not always what is best for us. I think the point of the movie is that often we are so wrapped up in our emotions and narratives that we can't see what is best for ourselves, yet our loved ones can. Seb's sister implores him to chill out and find a girl, while Seb implores Mia to keep trying because he knows that she needs the self confidence of success. Seb is already a great pianist, he already has all the self confidence in the world, and his sister rightly saw that what he really needed was a woman. We can see this in the film, Seb is clearly way happier any time he is with Mia.

Mia, on the other hand, really needed the self confidence from a successful career. She was devastated after so many years of rejection and failure, and Seb saw that she really needed to achieve her dream.

Here in the epilogue we see Seb alone in his apartment, and a picture of Seb's sister and her husband with their kid. Then we see Seb walk past the billboard of Mia, unable to look at it. These show us a Seb who has not moved on from Mia, and has not found what he was looking for with his club. Seb and Mia would have both been happier had he put his dream in the backseat to remain with her, but he didn't and their relationship fell apart. I don't think the movie is blaming Seb at all either, it's just the way things happened and they both acknowledge that.

I know a lot of people think they are both happy with their careers and that the smile and nod are them acknowledging each other of their happiness, but I just cannot see any way how this film is showing that to us. They are clearly showing Seb has not moved on and that it would have been best for both of them if they had stayed together.

I always interpreted his playing of the song as a metaphor for him & Mia together: when he first starts playing with just one hand, there's just so much sadness and despair. Slowly, the second hand enters, and the tone changes from bittersweet to hopeful.

they both achieved their dreams and are living happy lives, but when they look at each other they realize they were much happier together. that pause before he plays the piano, is one of the most painfully heartbreaking scenes I've ever seen. La la land is an absolute masterpiece.

I read this differently. I think the film very intentionally shows a Seb who is not happy with his decision. A picture of his sister, her husband, and their child is shown. He walks past the billboard of Mia unable to look at it. These show a lonely Seb who has not gotten over Mia. He achieved his "dream" but nothing in the film shows us that he thinks he made the right decision. In fact I think the whole point of this is him realizing both him and Mia would have both been happier had he put his dream in the backseat in order to stay with her.

Early in the film, Seb's sister is in his apartment and she implores him to chill out and find a girl, but he continually shoots her down going on about his dream. If you watch the film closely, Seb is clearly most happy when he is with Mia. In contrast, Mia has a lack of self confidence and wants to quit her dream, but Seb implores her to keep trying. I think the message is that often we are so wrapped up in our own emotions that we can't see what is best for us, but our loved ones can. Seb's sister knew that Seb was overly obsessed with his career and that he needed love, while Seb knew that Mia really needed to achieve her dream or she would lose her self confidence forever.

Seb's performance here is a love song to Mia, communicating to her that he wished he would have valued her over career.

I really think the film is showing us that Seb didn't need to accomplish his supposed dream, but Mia did, and that the best case scenario would have been if Seb stayed with her. But it's no fault to either of them and the movie doesn't blame Seb, it's just the way things went.

For me this was one of her favorite movies that we never got around to watching. She kinda did me dirty at the end of our relationship and essentially made me the one to end things it felt like (although stuff she said it made it sound like the didn’t want it this way), and a part of me hopes we find our way back to each other.

How could it not be Best Picture? Moonlight was very good yes. But, this is
a true masterpiece in filmmaking, a movie that stays in heart and lingers in your head many years later. All it takes is few piano keys and you're right back there. Amazing....

Man I never usually watch movies like this one and I don’t regret it. I also never tend to shed a tear. But this movie tore me apart, and I shed many many tears. The way they impact both of eachothers lives and both push eachother to accomplish their dreams. Yet have to split apart in order for that to come to fruition. It’s beautiful. And This scene at the end is so bittersweet like a lot of love is, but the way it ends is perfect yet devastating. What a film

la la land had come out 3 months after i started my very first relationship ever, and I can honestly say I didn't like or maybe didn't understand the ending when it happened and wished so badly that there was going to be a happier ending. 3 years have passed since that relationship ended, sat down one night and rewatched it and,,, i got it. I got every single look and exchange that mia and seb had in that ending. They both have their dreams, but lost each other along the way , but each of them can be happy/glad the other got what they always wanted. And at the end of it, those memories, like Their Song, will remain and only need a careful hand to play the cords, and have those memories dance, just for one moment.

I can vouch for this movie as this is exactly what has happened to my relationship w this special girl after 6+ years, it's been 4 months since we broke up.

We both weren't happy and satisfied with our current condition back then, and realized that if we maintained keeping this ship, it would exhaust either of us given time. Hence we decided to part ways to achieve our own life goals and dreams.

Here's to a better life ahead for each of us, regardless of what's gonna happen in the future, even though we will not probably be together anymore, we will always be the one who only knows the impacts that have been made for each of our lives.

I just saw this movie and noticed she did a slight hardly noticeable shake of her head when he saw her to indicate like “ don’t” which is what he did when he saw her at the pool party and she requested the song I ran. definitely not one to comment on scenes from movies on youtube and i didn’t really think i was one to watch la a land when i saw it pop up on netflix. but the intensity with which i cried after watching it last night has kinda stuck with me. i can’t decide if one would have had to had the experience of being truly in love and losing the person one way or the other and at least in my mind at least at some level if we were to see eachother all these years later there would be a similar reaction. or if the movie just makes u believe in their love so wholeheartedly that to see her w that other guy w a kid n them not together is heartbreaking enough in itself. whatever it is the combination of those 2 for me made me cry to where i couldn’t breathe for about 20 min. just wanted to say that

The movie tricked us into believing that they got back together when they sit under the observatory during the day after Mia's breakthrough audition. When actually it's a final farewell comforting talk before they parting their way. That's why they never kissed each other when they said they will always love one another and they are also sitting apart and don't hold each other like a couple. I noticed this when I watch the movie for the second time
