There is a simple way to get a top rank weapon befroe you rescue Rush:


1, gather information by fast travel to prosperity repeatly
2, get at least 9 treasure hunt locations
3, clear 9 treasure hunt quest, get 405 coins
4, buy blood dragon bow( if you can't use AP round yet )/ blood dragon AJM or silenced tec-9 ( I can't remember which one can be purchased by coins, but both these two are side arms and silenced, though the AJM isn't label as "silenced", it's a silenced pistol, and, in the case of you don't know it, any shot to the head using AP round is A GUARANTEED ONE-SHOT-KILL to any human enemies except the twins )
5, if you like to make some noice, buy MG42 or the pink AKMS


you can ignore step 1 and 2 if you can get information of the locations on the internet

I think that Optimized Vector should've been mentioned here as well, you can upgrade it, it's easier and quicker to unlock and still has 1200 RPM with a 40 mag and quick reload time, so it's really worth it

I've upgraded most of the elite weapons to between 1400 and 1500 damage and they all one-shot most enemies, most of the time. So it comes down to which weapon type and individual weapon within that type you prefer using since damage is largely irrelevant once upgraded enough. Personally, I usually equip a long range precision rifle, aka a "sniper rifle" as well as an intermediate range weapon, e.g; an assault rifle as well as a close range or backup weapon, usually a SAW launcher or handgun. And when hunting I use the compound bow (1441 damage) which is overkill. >:}

ETA: As far as upgrading, the best way I found is to farm expeditions and outposts. Find one of each which you can complete in the shortest time and do them over and over. You’ll get a lot of components from the expedition* and Ethanol (and components) from the outpost.

Do that and you’ll soon have enough of everything and will be able to upgrade your weapons to insane levels of carnage. >:}

*Expeditions do not reward Ethanol.

I actully liked the new system where u cant mod your weapons for 1 specific reason. The Outposts. Taking an outpost have always rewarded u for doing it in stealth with more resourses and modding your weapons with silancers in the past (atlest to my memory) did not lower your dmg output so there was no penalty from modding your favorite loadout with a full set of silancers and never swap your weapons. This was the first far cry game where i was activly swapping my weapon loadout around depending on what i was doing.
