SHAPIRO Helen Lyrics

Wait, oh yes wait a minute mister postman
Wait, wait mister postman

Mister postman look and see
Is there a letter in your bag for me
I been waiting a long long time
Since I heard from that girl of mine
There must be some word today
From my girlfriend so far away
Please Mister postman look and see
If there's a letter, a letter for me
I been standing here waiting Mister postman
So patiently
For just a card or just a letter
Saying she's returning home to me

Mister postman look and see
Is there a letter in your bag for me
I been waiting a long long time
Since I heard from that girl of mine

So many days you passed me by
See the tear standing in my eye
You didn't stop to make me feel better
By leaving me a card or a letter

So Mister postman look and see
Is there a letter in your bag for me
I been waiting a long long time
Since I heard from that girlfriend of mine

You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute
You gotta check it and see, one more time for me
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute
Deliver the letter, the sooner the better
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute

You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute

Overall Meaning

"Please Mr. Postman" is a classic Motown song made famous by The Marvelettes in 1961, but this version by Helen Shapiro was released in 1962. The song tells the story of a young woman waiting for a love letter from her far-away boyfriend. Through the lyrics, she pleads with the postman to check his bag for her letter and to deliver it to her as soon as possible.

The song begins with the repeated refrain, "Wait, wait a minute, Mister Postman." This opening line sets the tone for the rest of the song - a pleading request for the postman to deliver a letter from the singer's love interest. The singer asks the postman to look inside his bag to see if there's a letter for her. She explains that she's been waiting "a long long time" to hear from her boyfriend.

Throughout the song, the singer's desperation becomes more and more palpable. She tells the postman that she's been standing there "patiently" waiting for even just a card or a letter from her beloved. She even goes so far as to say that she's been standing there so long that she has tears in her eyes. By the end of the song, the singer is practically begging the postman to deliver her letter as soon as possible.

Overall, "Please Mr. Postman" is a classic love song that captures the angst and desperation of waiting for a long-distance lover to reach out. It's a timeless theme that has resonated with listeners across generations.

My favorite version of this song. This should have been a massive hit for Helen. My favorite part is 2:06 - 2:10.

I like this version of "Please Mr. Postman" by Helen Shapiro. While The Marvelettes version is most popular in the U.S., this version has better backing musicians and singers than The Marvelettes' version of "Please Mr. Postman". I'm 73 and this is the first time (12-28-19) that I've heard this alternate version of "Please Mr. Postman". Thanks for posting this video!
