Politically Correct
SR-71 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't mean to piss you off with things I might say
But when I try to shut my mouth they come out anyway
When I speak my mind, that's when we connect
But that's not politically correct

Our heads are so filled with thought, we can't use our imagination
Like a sky so filled with stars, you can't find a constellation
And everyone's so sensitive to every bad vibration
We're so impressing while we're regressing

There's nothing I believe in more than my own insignificance
So why does everybody think that my words can make a difference
I just don't have time to think up every social consequence
I'll just keep on talking you keep applauding

I don't mean to piss you off with things I might say
But when I try to shut my mouth they come out anyway
If you spoke your mind you might feel more connected
Until you get politically corrected

You lean a little to the left or the right but
You can only see what's on your side.
Look a little like a deer in the headlights
A little blind a little hypnotized.
So you conform with the best of intention
Change comes from inside.
After all that's what this country was founded on
Do nothing different just fall in line.

What happened to make us so afraid

You couldn't make a Mel Brooks movie today
I saw Blazing Saddles yesterday

Overall Meaning

The song starts with the singer admitting that he doesn't want to offend anyone with the things he says but sometimes he can't help but speak his mind. The irony is that he connects better with people when he speaks his mind, but that is not considered politically correct. He then goes on to criticize the current state of society, where people are too sensitive to bad vibrations and can't use their imagination. He also says that he believes in his own insignificance but wonders why people think his words can bring about change.

He then continues by urging people to speak their mind too since it makes them feel more connected. However, he warns that once you do speak your mind, you are likely to be politically corrected. The second verse further delves into how people conform to either the left or the right without seeing what's on the other side. He urges people to look a little harder, not just to fall in line with the best of intentions. He ends the song by questioning what happened to freedom of expression and the ability to make jokes in current times.

In conclusion, SR-71's Politically Correct acts as a social commentary on societal expectations, having to conform to political correctness and the fear of being politically corrected. The lyrics urge listeners to speak their mind despite the fear and pressure to remain politically correct.

SR-71, even though you guys are no longer active, your songs will always rock our minds while we are sleeping, sad, happy, hyper, and so on and so forth~

@brittanyking4155

Jesus...the Bush/Gore election seems so tame compared to today's political issues.
Still one of my favorite songs.

These guys are so underrated

@lyrria1854

Oh for sure! SR71 was such an amazing band. There was so much truth to this song. I'm just so sad that the band isn't together anymore. I saw them in concert once and the quality of their music was just as outstanding in person as it was on their CD's. Absolutely one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

@EthanJohn1986

Yes! It came on my Spotify and I thought… hold up! I had to come here to the comments section to see if anyone else had thought the same thought I did… “well… this aged well”
