After becoming instant Top 40 material with their driving hit Right Now and the lesser-known Politically Correct on their first album, the band slowly shied from the limelight for its second album, part of the reason the third album was not released in the US.
In recent days lead singer Mitch Allan has pursued a solo career, reworking some SR-71 songs and creating some of his own. SR-71 split in 2007, but reformed in 2009.
The name of the band came from SR-71 Blackbird, a retired supersonic surveillance aircraft of the United States Air Force.

SR-71's song "They All Fall Down" is about a deeply complex and multifaceted character, who is aware of his ability to either be humble or destructive. He is a man who can be anything he wants to be- the source of someone's inspiration or their downfall. The lyrics explain that every nasty thing a man could be, he is capable of being. The chorus, 'cause they all fall down', implies that no matter how powerful a person may seem, they ultimately fall and fail one way or another.
The second verse of the song continues with the theme of duality within the character's personality. He can either show someone the beauty of a new day, or he can be the source of their desperation. He is a person everyone hates, but also someone they secretly desire. The lines, "you can turn away like you don't even see me, you can smile and act like you got something I need, but every night you go home alone and dream about being underneath me", further highlight the character's seductive yet mysterious qualities. The song also touches upon the idea that the character is afraid of falling in love because it brings pain, but somehow he finds himself being pulled toward someone who is "calling" him.
