After becoming instant Top 40 material with their driving hit Right Now and the lesser-known Politically Correct on their first album, the band slowly shied from the limelight for its second album, part of the reason the third album was not released in the US.
In recent days lead singer Mitch Allan has pursued a solo career, reworking some SR-71 songs and creating some of his own. SR-71 split in 2007, but reformed in 2009.
The name of the band came from SR-71 Blackbird, a retired supersonic surveillance aircraft of the United States Air Force.

SR-71 Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Black has made me see but the truth has made me blind
To the fears
To the lies
They were here
All the time
In your sympathetic Sunday night I don't belong
To the fears
To the lies
They were here
All the time
The mouth of New York City talks
Spitting dust from streets to sidewalks
Pictures soaked in gasoline
Twisting through the steel and concrete
The smoke has cleared but I can't breathe
The new day is a prison for the souls who've lost hope
But I've been taught change comes to the ones who need it most
All the fears
All the lies
They were here
All the time
The lyrics of “Truth” by SR-71 speak about the changing colors in one's mind due to the negative influences of the outside world. The line “Blood and dust have changed all the colors in my mind” suggests that the violence and chaos in the world have affected the perspective of the writer. “Black has made me see but the truth has made me blind” is an interesting contrast between darkness and truth. It suggests that sometimes we can see things more clearly when things are not going well or when we have gone through difficult times. However, the truth can be hard to accept or face.
In the next verse, the lyrics speak about how the singer feels out of place and doesn't fit in with what they see around them. They speak of the lies and fears that are present in daily life. The line “Till all the hate that lines the face of my enemy is gone” suggests the desire for change or resolution. The writer doesn't want to belong in a world where hate is a part of people's everyday lives.
The final verse speaks about the aftermath of something terrible happening. It speaks about how the smoke has cleared but it's still hard to breathe. The line “The new day is a prison for the souls who've lost hope” speaks about the struggle to find hope in a challenging world. The writer has hope and believes that change can happen if we need it the most.
