Salty Lips
Sahara Hotnights Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Billy told Mark and Marky told Jane
The wrapping will change but the story is the same
You gossipers and liars won't take the blame
And silence will speak again

Little Johnny he whispered to Sam
And none of them knew where the rumours began
They won't give a damn if the shit hits the fan
Oh people ain't got no shame

Oh, oh, oh salty lips telling lies
Let them talk let them fantasize
Oh, oh, oh salty lips telling lies
They don't need proof don't need alibis

Called up his sis who ran in to sue
She talks on and on got nothing better to do
The secrets you tell will travel back to you
Touched up hot and new
The word got Liz she couldn't keep it for long
And when her friend's checking in to find out what's going on
It always ends up where it doesn't belong
Whether it's right or wrong

Give us some more of those sweet lies will you
Tell us what's not for our ears

You little bird whisper
We are right beside ready to overhear

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Salty Lips" by Sahara Hotnights is a commentary on how gossip and rumors can spread like wildfire. The song begins by describing how Billy told Mark and Marky told Jane about something that happened, and how the story will continue to spread but with different versions. The singer of the song is disdainful of the people who spread rumors but don't take responsibility for the consequences. The phrase "salty lips" is used to describe those who tell lies and spread rumors, aiming to create intrigue and excitement, even if it's at the expense of others. The chorus of the song is a call to let the gossipers talk and fantasize, but to not take their lies as truths.

The song goes on to describe how gossip can ruin relationships and reputations. It talks about how Little Johnny whispered to Sam, but neither of them knew where the rumors began. The gossipers don't care about the consequences, even if their lies cause harm. The song also points out how people have a tendency to latch onto secrets and spread it around without any accountability. The lyric "The secrets you tell will travel back to you" serves as a warning that the rumors will eventually come back to the source.

Fantastic band, personaly i discovered them back in -99 when they released their first album with songs like "push on some more" and "quite a feeling" They have a bunch of really good pieces of music, "Salty lips" is just one of many. They been on the scene for a long time and honestly hasn't got as much recognition as they deserve.
