1) Saigon (born Brian Carenard, 1978) is an African-American rapper. Born in Newburgh, New York, He spent his upbringing moving between immediate and extended family members in Spring Valley, New York and Brooklyn as well as parts of New Jersey and Virginia. He cites his mother's inattention towards him due to the new arrival of numerous younger siblings as being the catalyst for his roughly 15-year rebellious period. At age 11 he began selling marijuana and at age 13 he had joined in a neighborhood gang. By the time Saigon reached 15 he had already been involved in at least two shootings for which he received jail time. This would be his home for the majority of the next several years of his life as he was "raised" in the New York Penal System. While incarcerated, he took the stage name Saigon from the influential Vietnam War book “Bloods” by Wallace Terry, which he read while he was serving time in prison.
He is currently signed to Just Blaze's Fort Knox Entertainment record label and is working on his major label debut entitled The Greatest Story Never Told for a November 2006 release, which has now been postponed to a later unannounced date.
He appeared on the second season of the HBO television series Entourage and this is credited as being a big boost to his career to the point where the mainstream U.S. population is beginning to recognize him as opposed to simply his previously small following. He also appears in the third season.
He also performed separate tracks with both Australian hip hop MC Phrase and singer Daniel Merriweather in 2005.
MTV News reported that on January 19th 2006, Saigon was stabbed in the temple with a beer bottle as he left a dinner in the Chelsea section of New York. A man approached Saigon and attempted to steal a chain of his, worth $18,000. When Saigon grabbed it back, a fight started. Saigon, bleeding from the head, tried to hail down a taxi (not wanting to get blood in his Mercedes Benz) but was unable to and drove himself to Bellevue Hospital where he received seventy stitches.
2) Saigon is also the name of an early 80s 3 piece Post-Punk band from Leamington Spa. Their music was released through First Floor Records.
3) Also the name of a Swedish heavy metal band.
4) Punk band from orange County California. Released a self-titled EP in 1981.
5) Finnish pop rock band founded 1980 and disbanded 1985. Made two unsuccessful albums and six singles during their career.
6) Saigon's "Ready For Romance?" was made available on Bandcamp in May 2013. The style is broadly lo-fi indie rock.

And nobody's really feelin' alright
I got a blunt for my chronic, a juice for my tonic
I know now...
So I know we'll be alright
When niggas tell you don't hurt nobody they being funny
When they say its Saigon they mean its money
Because one year I went to church and beat up the Easter bunny
Everyday I thank god with silent pray
So he can help me resolve some of my violent ways
I was locked up for four hundred holidays
I was in the peezee when I heard Easy E and Dr. Dre
Was in the pen for that bad boy death row thing
I was locked away when Dre was crowned west coast king
I'm the thug these rappers trying to be
Lyrically I'm a fuckin anomaly
You as much of a rapper as Sean John and me
Matter of fact you an actor like Sean Connery
I'm the nigga wit the rap sheet longer then your rap book
Hustlers got their chain snatched and they got their crack took
There's a war in the streets tonight
And nobody's really feelin' alright
I got a blunt for a chronic, a juice for my tonic
I know now...
So I know we'll be alright
Yeah, Nine-four, Destiny opens her eyes
For the first time, praise God, baby mom's cryin'
Planned to be a strong black family
But we both were too young, too strung, too much flashin'
New come, I caught verbal assassin runnin' with
Nothin' but the worst type, worst fight
But we brought my baby home the first night
Cursed like sailors, burst out the crib
Ragin' in my new car bought from entertainment
Champaign and gainin' clout fast, whiplash
Did this bitch just pass in the club pugged up, stupid ass
Grabbed her by the pony tail, "never disrespect me"
I'm a street vet, regret the sex, but not Desi
Moved back to your grandma, I'm single, the land's mine
She keeps the Benz, I'm all in the streets again
Squeezin' the pen, released again, chart toppers,
Hard-bottoms blessed the feet, now less baby mom's problems
New woman, she's great, this a different world,
Checkin' out my wife's chemistry with my little girl
It's so amazin' playin', life is so crazy
I've grown up the thankful for lessons God gave me
There's a war in the streets tonight
And nobody's really feelin' alright
I got a blunt for a chronic, a juice for my tonic
I know now that I'm feelin' right if it goes down
'Cause my third eye sees the lowdown
And I know it's not my time to go now
'Cause God's got my back in this showdown
So I know we'll be alright
The song "War" by Saigon is a powerful commentary on the struggles of life on the streets. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the harsh reality faced by those caught up in the cycle of violence and poverty in inner-city neighborhoods. The track begins with a sense of resignation, acknowledging that there is a war raging on the streets and that nobody is feeling alright. However, there is a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos as Saigon reflects on his own experiences and the lessons he has learned along the way. He has a blunt for his chronic and a juice for his tonic, but he also has a deep faith that everything will be okay.
Throughout the song, Saigon's rhymes are incisive and hard-hitting, drawing on his own experiences to tell a story that is both personal and universal. He reflects on the way he has been written off as a "dummy" by those who don't understand him, and acknowledges that his past mistakes have led him down a difficult path. However, he takes responsibility for his actions and expresses gratitude for the second chances he has been given. In the end, his faith in God and in himself is what keeps him going, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
Overall, "War" is a powerful track that speaks to the struggles faced by many in inner-city neighborhoods. The song's message of hope and resilience is a testament to the human spirit, and serves as a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always a way forward.

Lol right after south Vietnam capitulated, Vietnam became one of our closest friends in South east Asia.

Fascinating stuff. What is also fascinating to me is how quickly Vietnam and the United States normalized relations after the fall of the Soviet Union. Even in the early 80's an American could visit Saigon and walk freely through the city without any problems from the people or local police.
