Read Full Bio ↴Sam Brookes is a British alt-folk singer-songwriter based in London.
After a well-received whistle stop UK tour support slot with Kinks front man Ray Davies, Brookes released his debut single on Helium Records as a solo artist Breathe Me In / In Weeks. Brookes is an accomplished musician and performer with an emerging depth and maturity that increasingly shows in his writing. His finely-crafted songs, immaculate phrasing and beautifully modulated delivery reach easily beneath the skin of his audience. The magical space he creates and the elasticity of his writing and playing have the echoes and jazz arches of giants like John Martyn and Tim Buckley who he includes as his influences along with Scott Matthews, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Laura Marling.

at my best i'm the king of compassion
From a long line of doing it wrong.
I strike a melody to see me right
Oh where is my love,
for I won't be coming home tonight.
and a drought of action in the mind
From a long line of doing it wrong
I strike a melody to see me right.
Oh where is my love,
does she think of me in the dead of the night.
Oh where is my love,
for I won't be coming home tonight
The dawn sings a to me,
says the sun is coming for you and me
Our dreams will all unfold, pick the thread up
and sow sows sow sow sow sow sow sow sow
From a long line of doing it wrong,
I strike a melody to see me right.
From a long line of doing it wrong,
I strike a melody to see mee right
Oh where is my love,
does she think of me in the dead of night
Oh where is my love,
for I won't be coming home tonight
The lyrics of Sam Brookes's song "Numb" explore the different aspects of his personality and his struggle to find love and purpose in life. The opening lines of the song, "At my worst I'm a terrorist of love. At my best I'm the king of compassion" suggest that the singer can be both destructive and loving depending on his mood and circumstances. He then refers to his family legacy of making mistakes and choosing the wrong path in life, which he overcomes by channeling his feelings into his music.
The repetition of the line "From a long line of doing it wrong, I strike a melody to see me right" indicates that music is a therapeutic tool that helps the singer to navigate through life's challenges. He searches for love and connection with someone special, but seems to be lost and uncertain. The lines "Oh where is my love, does she think of me in the dead of night" express his longing and his fear of being alone.
The song ends on a positive note with the singer being inspired by the dawn and the promise of a new day. He sees music as a way to weave his dreams and aspirations together and make sense of his life. The lyrics of "Numb" are a poignant reflection of the human condition, of our struggles, hopes and fears, and the power of music to heal and inspire us.

Sam, massive fan dude. Not sure if you ever read your comments on here, I'm sure it's hard to keep as you're so busy touring and things. I'm a BIG admirer of your work and I think you're album "Kairos" is perfect. Literally my favorite album of this year, and believe me I listen to alot of music. Including your good friend Newton Faulkers latest which is amazing in it's own right, but your album touches me deeper in places I thought couldn't be reached. Thank you. "Breaking Blue" and "Numb" are just amazing. Again, thank you for writing, recording and sharing this brilliant record with us. Regards, Jon.
