I remember that day so clearly because my mom worked in this building and her office was directly above this room. I worked very close to there at the time and remember seeing a huge convoy of police cars heading in that direction so of course once I hear what’s happened I’m freaking out. The man speaking with the gunman, Bill Husfelt, had been my high school principal for 4 years and became Superintendent the year after I graduated. He would always be at my families parties and events so I knew him fairly well, it’s a miracle he survived. The bullet went into the wall directly behind him and it honestly looked like it went right through him. It doesn’t surprise me at all that he handled it so calmly, Mr. Husfelt is a genuinely good guy.

Situations that otherwise could have been non-lethal often turn into someone maimed or dead. How many suicides? How many accidentally shooting themselves, a family member or friend? How many heated arguments between couples that ended in murder in a moment of passion? Even situations were someone is doing something consciously maliciously, in many cases you have people acting as executioners for petty crime. Tens of thousands of American lives lost annually because of an irrational paranoid opposition to better gun regulation.

The best thing to do in a situation like this is to be totally agreeable and act like you are on their side because to debate someone with a gun only makes them feel more insignificant. The reason they are going to those measures of getting a gun involved is because they feel like that is the only way they are going to be heard. So, if you if you hear them out and try your best to keep them talking go along with whatever they say it may give you time enough for the police or one of the good guys to come in and neutralize them. I have, though in a different situation. A drunk friend wanted to play russian roulette, he saw the bullet was one hole before the barrel in the revolver, and wanted to shoot me, not thinking about how the barrel would turn one step by using the trigger. I begged and screamed at him not to do it.
