Please Don't
Santigold Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Greed, injustice, and dominance
A women won't know no relationship
That's why, why I make, make my life a trip
So if there's a problem
Well I don't the president
Don't let them look down on us
Please don't
Like they used to do to me
Nixon, Castro, Zhou Enlai
Qaddafi is easy and I'll tell you why
A woman knows just how to do, only rub his leg
He understood my point of view so I don't have to beg
So if there's a problem
Well I don't the president
Please don't
Don't let them look down on us
Please don't
Like they used to do to me
So if there's a problem
Well I don't the president
Please don't
Don't let them look down on us
Please don't
Like they used to do to me
Please don't
Don't let them look down on us
Please don't
Like they used to do to me
The lyrics of Santigold's song "Please Don't" shed light on the different social and political issues faced in the world. From intolerance and injustice to dominance and greed, she highlights the various issues prevalent in society. She specifically mentions how women face problematic situations in relationships due to the societal norms and expectations placed on them. The artist mentions that she avoids such scenarios by making her life a trip, indicating that she chooses to live her life on her terms and without compromising her beliefs.
The artist goes on to assert her stance on political leaders such as Nixon, Castro, Zhou Enlai and Qaddafi. She contrasts their personalities by mentioning how Qaddafi is easy to understand, and all she needs to do is rub his leg to make him see her point of view. These lines unmistakably elucidate the artist's feelings on women's expected sexualization at the hands of those in power, leading them to become helpless and powerless.
The chorus of "Please Don't" is a powerful call to arms as Santigold pleads with people to not let others look down on them. She refers to her past experiences, where people disregarded her, and she does not want anyone else to face similar treatment. The lyrics portray a strong feminist message, with Santigold urging people to take ownership of their lives and to stand up against power dynamics that marginalize or diminish them.

Had the pleasure of seeing/experiencing the live production of Here Lies Love at the Public Theater [a few years ago] it was amazing! I bought the soundtrack/cds - also a great work of art by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim. I really enjoy the variety of artists and the individual styles they bring to each song. Wonderful work by all involved! Thank you!
