Anything But Lonely
Sarah Brightman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Anything but lonely
Anything but empty rooms
There's so much in life to share
What's the sense when no one else is there?

Anything but lonely
Anything but only me
Quiet years in too much space
That's the thing that's hard to face
And

You have a right to go
But you should also know
That I won't be alone for long
Long days with nothing said
Are not what lie ahead
I'm sorry, but I'm not that strong

Anything but lonely
Anything but passing time
Lonely's what I'll never be
While there's still some life in me
And

I'm still young, don't forget
It isn't over yet
So many hearts for me to thrill
If you're not here to say
How good I look each day
I'll have to find someone who will

Anything but lonely
Anything but empty rooms
There's so much in life to share
What's the sense when no one else is there?

What's the sense when no one else is there?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sarah Brightman's song Anything but Lonely explore the feeling of loneliness and its impact on an individual. The song is about a person who has been alone for a long time and is tired of being lonely. She explains that there is so much in life to share and asks what's the sense of experiencing it when there is no one else to share it with. The emptiness of being in a room without another person is claustrophobic and frightening, and the thought of spending lonely years in too much space is hard to confront.

The chorus talks about the desire to be anything but lonely, anything but only me. The singer acknowledges that her partner has a right to go, but she won't be alone for long. She is not strong enough to live in quiet years with nothing said. She is still young, and there is still so much life left in her to experience. She won't settle for anything but a full life with many people to share it with. The song ends with an unspoken question, "What's the sense when no one else is there?" underscoring the importance of companionship and connection.

I know the public pretty much rejected this show, but I find it to be one of his better scores. This is great footage of her in the show and I always found it rather ironic that her staring in a show called Aspects of Love was the final nail in the coffin of their marriage. Thank you for posting Spiderwoman!

The score is gorgeous, the book was so convoluted and inept that it rivalled the worst telenovela.

@import26 Heh. Your comment reminded me of the Forbidden Broadway parody.

Aspects of Love is a beautiful show, it is a mature show about relationships. By the time this ALW show opened it had to compete with the visual thrill rides that some audiences expected to see after Phantom, Starlight, and Cats. I think that it was too sophisticated for those who wanted to see another spectacle, and yet not sophisticated enough as a Sondheim show to appeal to others. Anything But Lonely is a spectacular song and Brightman delivers it effortlessly while showing her acting abilities, she doesn’t just belt out the song as she does brilliantly in studio recordings, but gives it a quiet vulnerability. Thank you so much for sharing this with us : )

Sarah was really goof in this but I thought Ann Crumb was just sensationally brilliant as Rose.

I absolutely love this show. I never understood why the public wasn’t as enthusiastic.

The plot is ridiculous. Like this scene. What kind of difficuot choice is it for Alex when he was just in live with a child and had Giulietta to go to?

@niclesnyc

Her acting and her singing are excellent here.
