Fly
Sarah Brightman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And all she ever thinks about
Is being any other place than this
'Cause she remembers having wings
But she has forgotten what it's like
To feel a paradise of bliss

And all I want to do is fly
Just fly
And all I want to do is fly
Just fly

I want to fly
Into the sky
I want to fly to paradise
All through the night
Into the light
I want to fly to paradise

And all she ever thinks about
Is memories of swinging through the sky
'Cause she remembers having wings
But she's forgotten what it feels like to fly

And all I want to do is fly
Just fly
And all I want to do is fly
Just fly

I want to fly
Into the sky
I want to fly to paradise
All through the night
Into the light
I want to fly to paradise

When you look into the sky
You might catch her flying by
Flying by
All she wants to do is fly

On her way to paradise
Paradise

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah Brightman’s song Fly hold a deep and metaphorical meaning. The first two lines of the song, “I know a colourful room, Where we can fly,” is a beautiful description of a room with an aura of happiness, excitement and free expression. It can be interpreted as a place where Emily can escape reality and indulge in her own imagination. She further adds to the description with, “And take a spin to the moon on Aunt Angelica's pie,” which is likely to be a metaphorical expression for the limitless opportunities, ideas and possibilities that Emily wants to embrace.

The following lines, “I am a fly, pie in the sky, Across a harvest of stars and constellations, We'll drink a star juice on Mars,” implies Emily’s airborne state of being, her freedom and perhaps, a sign of her willingness to break away from societal norms and regulations to explore and embrace her internal longings. The words “pie in the sky” is often used to suggest an idea or project that is unrealistic or unlikely to succeed but Emily looks at it differently, keeping hope alive for a brighter future full of endless and limitless potentials.

The last few lines of the song, “Miss our connection and cry, Coz I don't know why, I am a fly, The major is dead, It went to his head, We gonna fly” creates a melancholic aura of missed opportunities, unrequited love and the uncertainty of Emily’s dreams. “The Major is dead, it went to his head” is a metaphor for Emily's ambition and the hurdles that come with it. With the major hurdle of societal blocks dead, Emily feels a sense of freedom to explore even more, and as said in the last line, “we gonna fly,” Emily is ready to take the leap.
