Murder in Mairyland Park
Sarah Brightman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Things that happen just once
If she'd looked she would have seen it
He was standing all night
'Cross the street very still
And they go out so easily
The street lamps
The cars come and go
Crazy so crazy

But I see you too clearly
I don't trust myself anymore
If it's all true just say it

I may already know that sound when it's over
The sidewalks will carry you home.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah Brightman's song "Murder in Maryland Park" convey a sense of confusion and uncertainty, with the singer grappling with their own perceptions and understanding of a violent incident. The first lines, "Things that happen just once / If she'd looked she would have seen it," suggest the idea of missed opportunities or overlooked clues. The singer seems to be addressing someone who may have been a witness to a crime, urging them to pay closer attention and take action. Yet the next lines paint a picture of eerie stillness, with a man standing motionless across the street for hours on end. The reference to street lamps and passing cars creates a sense of the mundane and the routine contrasting sharply with the potential danger lurking nearby.

The chorus of "Crazy so crazy / But I see you too clearly / I don't trust myself anymore" hints at a deeper level of fear and paranoia on the part of the singer. They seem to be struggling to come to terms with what they have witnessed or what they believe to be true, their own perceptions now clouded by doubt and uncertainty. The final lines, "If it's all true just say it / I may already know that sound when it's over / The sidewalks will carry you home," suggest a sense of resignation - as though the singer knows that the truth may be too terrible to face head-on, and that perhaps the only thing left to do is to retreat back into the safety of their own home.

Thank you for uploading this... It is an unbelievably underrated album - "Fly". Yes, it is a bit "crazy", but that is the theme "...we're gonna fly, pie in the sky"! There are some exceptionally brilliant work on it, and yes, in this song the guitar (at 2:34) is brilliantly dramatic - complementing the song beautifully.

wow so lucky!!

Brilliant rendition of an unusual song. Years ago on youtube there was an absolutely genius pairing of Sarah’s track with scenes from 2002 “time machine” with Sienna Guillory and Guy Pearce. Guillory’s character is murdered by a man who had been watching in the park were she is accidentally killed in a struggle with gun toting robber. This sets off Pearce’s attempt to stop murder by traveling in time. This should be brought back if anyone had saved a copy.

Sarah has so many great albums, but this album, La Luna, Dive, and her Classics album remain my favorites!

It is strange she covered this? But she is a diverse songstress! I perceive she saw this at a deeper lever. Otherwise would not have done so. 🌏 I became a fan of her music in the later 90’s. I like her diversity and live Opera. Her music transcends generations. She is more ethereal. ✨Throughout the years hasn’t let her messages get lost. Even if your not a fan of Opera? I suggest you enjoy some of her music as her messages are clear whether in another language or in different genres! I respect her blending and her Early videos are epic.

@GarionOrb

It's not strange at all. Sarah Brightman covers tons of songs. Most of them, in fact. She makes them her own, though! This one in particular is far superior to the original, in my opinion.

@Analfeber

What IS strange is that you think this version is "far superior to the original", as it in my ears sounds more or less like an exact copy, both structure, the sound of the instruments, everything is almost identical but the "Pink Floydish" lead guitar that adds a nice touch at the end. I can add in your defense that I'm probably a bigger fan of Stina than Sarah, that's probably why I write this post. But I think anyone neutral, unbiased person would agree that there's not much difference except the ending guitar... ;)
