I'll Be Home For Christmas
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You can count on me
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams
Sarah McLachlan's rendition of I'll Be Home for Christmas was released in 2006 as part of her holiday album, Wintersong. The song was originally written by Kim Gannon and Walter Kent during World War II and it was intended to be from the point of view of a soldier far away from home during Christmas time. However, McLachlan's version takes on a more universal quality, speaking to anyone who longs to be home for the holidays.
The lyrics play on that universal theme, promising loved ones that the singer will be home for Christmas, even if it is only in their dreams. The repeated refrain of "Christmas Eve will find me where the love light gleams," creates a sense of yearning for a warm and familiar environment, and the longing to be with loved ones during the holiday season. The song's inclusion of "snow and mistletoe" as well as "presents on the tree" shares a classic, idyllic Christmas nostalgia that it shares with many Christmas songs from that era.
Overall, McLachlan's version of I'll Be Home for Christmas captures the sense of longing, of hoping to be with loved ones over the holidays, and highlights the emotional value and importance of spending time with those who matter most, regardless of where someone finds themselves during the season.
